  • are these drives reliable? I only really use WD ones, but I need new drives for my media center as my current ones are full.

    • +5

      Personal experience:

I have not found one brand to be more reliable than any other. In my main PC is 4x2TB WD & 4x2TB Seagate, currently none have failed. In another PC 2x1.5TB Seagates have failed (same batch) and 2xWD (1.5TB, 1TB). The Seagates failed in the first week whilst a WD failed after 2 years. Personally I prefer them to fail soon and hard, so I now only buy Seagates (plus I prefer their green drives, 5900RPM vs. variable RPM).

      Personal experience:

It's been a few years now, but after several Seagate Expansion drives that had the "click of death" and tons of data lost i decided to buy ANY other brand than Seagate. And i lived happily ever after.

    • +1

      Personal experience:
WD 320gb internal - died out of warranty
WD 320gb external - died a month out of warranty
Buffallo 1TB external - died within warranty, replacement is going strong so far
      Work's WD 500gb internal - died
Friend's 1TB WD external - died two months out of warranty
Another friend's 3TB WD external - died just today.

Got 2 Seagate internals. So far so good.
Got 1 Seagate, 1 Samsung at work. Also going strong

(Needless to say, prejudice against all WD products now..)

  • The $9.95 delivery charge kinda takes the shine off the deal

    • Where do you live? Mine estimates $0 for delivery, in outer Brisbane suburbs.

      • +2

They've changed the deal, it now ships free

        • +1

I see, nice move by Dick Smith, makes the deal even better :)

  • Can we remove the HDD and reuse the case with another HDD again?

    Free ext case!

    • +1

Yes, but you will probably break some clips while dismantling it. You can run them quite nicely without the black plastic case ie they have a inner metal enclosure that covers the important parts.

Edit: not sure, these are a slightly different model to the ones I have.

    • Would like to be able to do this to..

Anyone know if the case can be re-used, need 2TB for my NAS but using the case would be useful.

      • Yeah I'd like to know this too in case a of warranty claim as I doubt Seagate would cover it if removed. Could be wrong though as they happily sent me a replacement for an almost 2 year old 1TB internal drive last week without any fuss.

  • Does this one run of USB or AC power?

    • AC Power :-(

    • It's AC powered

    • +6

      For future reference:

      Desktop: AC Powered
      Portable: USB Powered

  • ahhh bummer

  • Shame I bought one from Officeworks last month for $99 :(
    Just my luck

    • Purchased this from DSE last week and only opened it last night. Dammit!!

      • +1

I think DSE themselves have a price guarantee, if the price you paid get lowered in the next 2 weeks, you get the differences back.

        so go check with them?

    • +2

If it was purchased on a gold or platinum credit card you could get the difference refunded.

  • free delivery on home page

  • +1

Yeah now it's showing up as free delivery to my postcode whereas it was $9.99 a few mins ago. Woo!

    • +1

Thanks guys. Updated as $79 delivered. Wow….now this is a bargain

  • Also ordered and got free shipping - 4220

  • Any idea what type of drive is installed? Is it one of those nasty "green" ones?

    • Green is fine for external drives; you don't expect huge speed when you're dealing with external drives. Externals are usually used for storage and sequential read of large files.

  • -1

So I can get 2 of these for $158 and get it for $40 per tb or the 3tb from OW which is $46 per TB…$6 cheaper per TB woo. I think I will buy 2 :)

  • Rather good deal on the XBA-2

    http://dicksmith.com.au/product/A8765/sony-balanced-armature…

Thinking of picking one up. Amazon is selling these for $198.

  • Another hdd i have so many now but to good to resist :)

  • +1

Damn you OzBargain! At least I have just given $79 to the Aussie economy.

    • Isnt DSE now american owned???

  • +2

im going to go officeworks and get it beat by 5% (i also have a coles group / myer gift card) so I might as well use it for something I actually need for once lol

Any of you use any special backup software for these drives or is it better to get a dedicated backup seagate drive for backing up?

    • Just picked mine up from Officeworks for $75.05, no issues with price match and no waiting for Dick to post it :)

    • Will do the same after work. Thanks for reminding me about price matching at OW. :)

    • went to OW and got the price match and further discount… although only after they scrutinised dick smith's website to check shipping costs. Had some trouble with the Australian power adapter, the pins weren't connecting properly but it has fixed itself after a while of playing with it. Getting 125 MB/s write speeds.

  • +3

    officeworks for $75.05

    • cool as ice buddy cool as ice

    • +1

Does Officeworks has pay wave? Get further 5% cash back using ING Direct! :P

      • +1

not sure, but you can buy a Coles&Myer gift card and then pay with that in OW.

        • do you get discount for that GiftCard? where do you buy them?

        • +1

Buy a $75.05 coles&myer gift card (@coles) using your ING so you get the 5%. Then go to OW ask to price match, pay with the gift card.

        • thanks aldoduco

        • $75.05 - $3.75 = $71.30

          Or $35.65 per TB.

      • +1

The Officeworks I went to (Garden City QLD) accepted paywave.

  • Deleted by AussieMark

  • wow this is truly a great price!
got the seagate expansion 3TB from OW for $119 last year :)

  • What speed is the Hard drive 7200??

    • FWIW the 3TB of these drives is a Seagate Barracuda ST3000DM001 (7200)

  • Got it last month from JB for $79.20

    • +4

Should have waited a month and saved 20cents.

    • Hoping this spurs JB to match this deal. I've got a gift card to use up….

  • Going to get this from OW, thanks OP and those who suggested price matching OW

  • This is great deal, shame that internal drives don't sell at this prices like it did back in '11.

  • +1

    bought two dammit

ok i need to open up a whole bunch now to stuff into my microserver

    ignore bitches

    acquire drives

  • Is this compatible with Mac?

    • yes

      System Requirements

Windows Vista, Windows XP or Mac OS X 10.4.8 or higher

  • Is this also in sydney?

    • Free delivery nationwide.

  • can I take the case off and put the internal driver in my NAS? internal driver is powered by USB is it?
if driver failed, to claim warranty do i need to put the case on and return or just the internal driver is fine?

  • I had few wish cards money unspent, spent on this deal. Not a bad one.

  • +1

They have 1800 of them, it should last long enough so that everyone can grab one, looks like, they are liquidating the stock.

  • +3

    Pricematched at OW.
The drive inside mine is Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 (7200)
At my OW store there were 2 types:

    Assembled in Thailand
    Product of China
    DOM: 09/2012

    Assembled in China
    Product of China
    DOM: 07/2012

    I got the Thailand one.

    • Which OW?

      • North Ryde (NSW)
They only had 3-4 of the Thailand ones and maybe 7 of the China ones

    • +1

Got the same drive @ OW yesterday.
Although I think the staff at my local shop hate price matching customers. The cute sales attendant backed off like I was a leper when I mentioned the words "Price Match". I got 2tb for $75~ so I'm happy.

    • I bought one from each location, I did not check.

But it seems like a good idea to get two different batches, you think?

    • Did you damage the case when you pull the drive out?

  • Is this the cheapest deal for 2tb external hard drive?

  • +1

Thanks guys I got two from Officeworks via price match. I must have been the first buyer as they had no idea.

Seems like the Dicksmith weekend special has just driven more sales to Officeworks amongst Ozbargainers.

    • +4

Not for me. Save $4 by driving to a store, finding some OW staff member, waiting for them to look it up, argue with them that Dickies aren't offering it in store thus OW don't have to price match, arguing that it's freight free so they should, wasting 30 mins of my time plus petrol? No thanks, deliver to my door please.

      • Hmmm Sorry to hear that, My attendant was polite and even said good one me as OW make a fortune on these things.

      • +2

You are not really making it easy for yourself.
Next time just print out the screen with all the details including free shipping and hand that to them.
Save them and you a lot of unnecessary mucking about, especially on a busy Sat morning. 100% easy every time doing this.

Got mine from Burleigh Heads OW $75.05 btw and they had shelves full of them, must have been 40+

Bonus super chatty, smoking hot chick serving too which beats the dopey nerd boys at Dicks hehe

  • Managed to get it for around $71.

5% staff discount, then 5% from wish gift card.

  • Officeworks website is a pain in the butt you go there as it says the store has IN STOCK and guess what been outa stock for awhile.

  • Edit: page back, musta been server hiccup.
May be sold out, webpage is not found.

  • site seems to be down

  • priced matched at OW Alexandria, thx OP!

    • Priced matched at OW Nowra, thanks OP, Thanks Dick Smiths

  • pricematched @ blacktown OW. i got the last one on the shelf. there are no more at the north parra one.

it's not really that much of a bargain though considering these were $79.20 during xmas anyway —> http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/88986

and it certainly doesn't beat the $100 3tb JB deal at the end of last year —> http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/89417

  • +1

I picked up a couple price-matched at OfficeWorks in East Perth on Saturday. There were quite a few left on the shelf if anyone wants one.

Any tips on how to open these without complete wrecking the enclosure?

    • +1

So you bought more than you needed because it was cheap?
      True oz-bargainer.

    • Following a tip I found online I ran the drive for a while to firstly ensure it worked before pulling it apart and secondly to warm the case up. Then I stuck it in the sun for about 5 mins to really warm it up and expand the case. Popped apart surprisingly easily with no damage just gently wiggling one of those old thin and wide butter knives along the join.

I had more problems trying to get it apart from there till I realised I had to peel the little rubber bumpers off that were covering the 4 screws :)

  • They have heaps at OW Wentworthville, NSW(over 140 in stock as of last friday). FYI.

  • bought 1 from castle hill OW and found the seal broken when I got home. Could the drive be swapped by someone?

    • That's strange. The one I bought yesterday comes with clear plastic vacuum wraps and the seal sticker no one end of the box.

    • sounds a bit dodgy mate. take it back.

  • Just read that the offer ends today, damn, I was going to buy it tomorrow in the city. Guess I have to wait for another bargain :( Luckily read it today though, or would have been embarrasing at OW trying to pricematch a non-existant deal.

    • No….you don't have to wait for another bargain.
You can still order online ( till midnight) and get free delivery at comfort of your home.
      Have a good night

  • Nice and quick DSE! Ordered Friday, delivered today.
