Standard sale. ~$108, with ~$80 spike deal.

    • I just searched on Camelcamel. Prices has never been that cheap.

    • I watch these weekly and $114 is standard price all inclusive unless you want to include obscure limited codes that only work for sone people. This excludes the $5 off visa deal however as id assume allot of people have visa now.

These are great especially as an access point.

    They do 2.5gbe as well.

This one also has dual (2.4+5GHz) WiFi radios, which can be important; my ar300m16 (AKA the gl.inet "Shadow") can act as an access point and a repeater simultaneously even having only one radio, but if using it as a repeater and it loses the signal of the upstream WWAN (eg. you have the router in your bag running from a power bank, and wander too far away from a free public WiFi hotspot) the ar300m's WLAN goes down too.

My goal was to connect to public or hotel WiFi, etc. when available, and fall back to a USB 4G/LTE modem for internet whenever not, so this was a real pain the ass; unless I had a laptop or USB-C ethernet adaptor for my phone handy, it meant I couldn't even access the admin panel to try and fix it- rather, it would require doubling back to my last connected hotspot and rebooting.

I've kinda solved this now by installing the multiwan3 and travelmate plugins, but it still requires power cycling the router whenever the WWAN drops out. And that's fine, but if I had bought the Beryl it would be able to keep the AP radio up for WLAN connections even if the WAN was down/restoring, due to them having their own separate radios (it would also have been nice to run a meatier version of Adguard, but not "spend another $100 on this misadventure" nice).

Yep, fingers crossed. Otherwise black friday I guess.

Great little modem. I use it in the field on my astrophotography PC. Solid.

Bought this to connect my PC with the quest 3 wirelessly using virtual desktop. Works perfectly fine for that purpose.

This might seem like a stupid question, but what benefit would this be. If you are away from the home and there is Wi-Fi, why don’t you connect to the Wi-Fi? Why do you need this ??

    • +4

I use mine when travelling. I have 3 devices. Family would have another 5 or so. Easier to connect this to the wifi instead of 8 individual devices (especially if only staying for 1 night in a hotel).
Some hotels also limit the amount of devices you can connect. This only counts as 1 regardless of how many devices are connected.

      • +6

This. You configure all your devices to connect to the Beryl AX and then only need to update it with whatever Wifi/ethernet you're using, and not all your devices, as you move between hotels. Especially useful when some of your devices (ebook readers) are a little clunky to change wifi on.

Additionally it does Wireguard/Tailscale so I can seamlessly tunnel back to my home network if I need to.

Not a necessity but it's a nice to have. And it's small and lightweight enough I can chuck it in my bag and it's there if I need it.

        • +2

This is mostly what I use my gl.inet travel routers for (including Tailscale back to home network).

Plus, if you're so inclined, it's another fun thing to tinker around with.

This makes perfect sense. Thank you and to those below.

    • +2

Security, and then the ease of connecting multiple devices to the same network each time to avoid everyone having to plugin the wifi details.

Adguard is builtin. Can use vpn, wireguard, and tailscale like your just connecting at home.

If I have ethernet access its as simple as pluggin in the cable to the accomodations router. Sometimes its not accessible, and the wifi repeater works. Only had on hotel where the captive portal was a pain, but the recent firmware seems to be a lot reliable on this.

  • I have travelled with a mango router in the past and everytime I set it up in hotel room I feel like I am at work(maybe cuz I work in IT) and it puts me off, does anyone else feel this way or is it just me?

    • Just change your wifi name for a new and different feeling.

    • +3

Quite the opposite (yes work in IT too). Once I've connected my AR750S to the "public wifi" I know I'm subnetted from the rest of the public wifi, know my family has secure access automatically and just connect to my mobile WiFi without having to muck around with random SSIDs and passwords, know I've got a VPN back to home for both Aus content and security and know I can now run my Chromecast in the hotel room. Once I've got all this done, I can now just sit back and relax after a couple of easy steps. :)

  • Can anyone advise if a device like this can connect to a VPN such as proton or mullvad through a client? Does it run software that you can install a client on?

    • Yes you can set it up so that it operates as a VPN client for many commerical VPN providers so that all or select traffic runs through the VPN.

  • Genuine question, as I'm new to these, chasing recommendations on this one from OP, or this for $114 (with $5 Off Coupon)?

Almost exactly the same price, same wireless speed and ports etc, internal antennas.

    Some interesting comparisons here

  • Perfect for my upcoming holiday. Thanks
