They don't stock the 15 flavours. Coles is accessible to most people in Australia.

    • +1

      Genuine question: Which ones?

Colesworth can suck it… but damn they're everywhere. Like Bunnings.

      • IGA

      • +3

Foodland across South Australia. Weird to see this many downvotes, it's the standard discounted price in the alternating pricing cycle 🤷🏼‍♂️.

    • +1

So do people stop posting a discount because it might be available somewhere every week?

  • Is the new Pistachio any good?

  • +5

Has anyone noticed whether they always had high fructose corn syrup? Or was the formula changed recently?

    • I can only see it in the cookies and cream ingredients

    • +29

The recipe has changed recently. They've dropped the amount of cream in a number of their products by 21-28% according to the ABC

      • +8

Interesting. Will not bother buying anymore. Will have to dig deeper in to the ingredients in the Norco and Bulla equivalents.

        • +8

          Kapiti @aldi

          • @A Banana4scale: Kapiti’s belgian chocolate is incredible!
It’s too bad we don’t more of their range here.

        • +5

Both of those are sub-par too unfortunately. You want to be looking for more than 30% cream and/or more than 13% milk fat. Haagen-Dazs seems to be the only one up to scratch now in supermarkets.

        • I know the Norco mango isn't "real" Ice cream. The number one ingredient is sugar. I find that weird for a dairy company ice cream. Also with the sugar the overall fat content is still only 7.9%

      • They have replaced some cream with milk solids plus water.

      • +1

Thanks for sharing the article. That's such a shame, I also won't be buying anymore

      • +1

Thanks for sharing this. I did came across this article on my feed but missed out on reading this. Bloody Corporate greedy bastards.

      • Thank you for posting this. I'll let others know.

And just like that Connoisseur has been permanently removed. Not that I'll miss it anyway, haven't purchased it in over two years. These days buying Haagen-Dazs but not often as my freezer is usually full, but to me it's the only one that tastes like real ice cream.

  • +32

I was extremely disappointed with Connoisseur when I bought it a few months ago.

Both the taste and texture declined so much that we just had no interest in eating it. There's still around 3/4 left in the fridge. I don't think I'd be interested in buying it even if it cost $3-4 anymore, but it used to be my favorite before covid.

I came across this article today that explained a lot - basically they have reduced the amount of cream in their tubs by around 30% and replaced it with additives.

    • +16

It's sad really. They all cheap out in the end

      • +4

Same with Maxibon. Used to buy them religiously but after the decrease in quality, quantity, and increase in price. I gave up.

    • +6

      Skimpflation.

    • +1

Peters seem to have replaced some cream with milk solids plus water, so not quite the additives or filler theory many people make. Probably the best indicator is the fat content.
Old cafe grande total fat 10.8 saturated fat 6.1
New cafe grande total fat 9.5 saturated fat 5.4

12 percent drop in total fat and 11 for saturated.

ABC journos acting like enshitification is a brand new thing and they're not just telling everyone what we already knew.

    • Sad to hear - we regularly stock our freezer with this brand. So any recommendations for alternative brands that we should try?

      • +1

I've tried all my supermarket brands. Unfortunately they're ALL sub-par except Haagen-Dazs and Sara Lee Vanilla which seems to retain the bare minimum amount of cream. Sara Lee bonus points for egg yolk too.

Still nothing compares to home-made unfortunately. I know they CAN but for whatever reason they don't stock higher quality in the supermarkets.

Now don't get me started on why none of the supermarket custards contain egg… AKA the thing that makes it custard!

    • Not suprised Peters original vanilla is literally the worst product, should not be able to be called ice cream legally based on the ingredients. Number one ingredient is water. Now they are making other brands worse too.

  • +4

Bring back peanut butter variant please

    • +2

This is a good alternative, tried recently after it went on special for $7 and it's actually really nice, loaded with the little peanut butter cups.

Edit: just finished the tub and I'd probably rate it better than the Connoisseur version tbh, as good as that one was.

      • Waiting for discount

      • +1

Yep. The peanut butter cup is my favourite big market ice cream.

    • +2

They got rid of their best flavour and brought out Honeycomb which is inedible.

  • What is the best flavour of all time?

    • Cookies & cream has been rated highly.

    • +3

GOAT was Laneway Sweets Crunchy Peanut Butter.

    • +2

      Coffe grande

      • I have tried this one, the coffee flavour was too strong for me, after some time literally felt like eating a frozen coffee…

      • +1

Cookies & cream was the most popular, then Cafe Grande.

    • Interestingly, this is actually my favourite ice cream brand but I don't like any of the flavours. But the plain vanilla is really nice base and great for adding peanut butter cups, butterscotch, or a cold shot of espresso into.

  • +2

I missed the pre-covid matcha flavours. It feels like they've reduced the matcha powder percentage along with cream.

    • +1

    • +1

I've always thought the matcha flavour was pretty minimal. I just buy their vanilla and add matcha powder.

      • It feels worse now than before if my tastebuds serve me right. Do you blend the matcha powder in with a machine or using hand? And do you mix it in while frozen?

        • Nah just by hand. Or mix it with a tiny bit of milk and drizzle it over.

  • I went to the local gelato shop today, one schoop was $6. Then I thought I can get a whole 1L from coles for that price.

    • Same brand and flavour?

  • $6 Should be normal price

  • +3

Over Connoisseur, the quality has gone down too much. Moved onto Bulla, looking forward to trying their new Speculoos ice cream.

  • I Loved the gingerbread flavour anyone found an alternative to that?

  • +10

Connoisseur needs to eat some of the rising costs instead of passing it all onto the consumer in the form of gradual enshitification of their product via ingredient substitution. There will come a point, real soon, where they will just lose any remaining customer loyalty and it will be because they haven't shown any loyalty to their customers in return.

    • -1

Maybe they already have eaten some of the costs? If they passed it all along, maybe the price would be $20-30 a litre?

      • Unlikely.

      • lol what are you on mate? Making Ice cream is no rocket science. It is one of the easiest things to do and none of the ingredients that go into it cost a fortune to cost $20-30 a litre

        • +1

Ingredients no. But what about the salary of the ice cream makers or the rent or the electricity or the water or the gas. The price you pay for food isn’t just ingredients. As a one time cafe owner everyone complains “oh I could make this at home for $10!” Yes but you aren’t paying yourself a salary or paying someone to come bring the food for you or paying someone to clean up your mess are you?

          • @illusion99: lol Ice cream is fully Industrial it is made by machines. You don't pay salary to a machine do you? Yes there is the cost of maintenance but that is very minimal. Also electricity cost can easily be negated by putting up rooftop solar. I am amazed as to why you are hell bent on justifying a price increase by a European Multi National Company which earned an revenue of $728 Million last year just selling ice cream(Profits intentionally undisclosed). Mate you seem to be too brainwashed into protecting capitalism.

            • @ninohax: I just know what’s involved in a big manufacturing company. Teams and staff typically involved and needs to be paid are marketing, legal, risk, compliance, pricing, finance, operations, warehousing, distribution, IT, sales - in addition to the actual ingredients and equipment.

      • Maybe they could introduce cheaper products instead

  • I like the Honeycomb and Australian Honey flavour. But in truth, skimpflation is really killing my enjoyment of having ice-cream as a treat. The taste and texture is awful compared to the past where it was much better.

  • Flavor & quality has gone to hell since they reduced the cream content by 30%, as others have already posted.

No reason to buy this poor excuse for a supposedly Connosseur ice cream no matter how discounted it maybe.

    • +2

And as I mentioned, they replaced some of the cream with a combination of milk solids and water. The milk fat content has reduced by around 11%, not 30% (Edit: for cafe grande).

Those who just want the basic flavours, can simply get the Aldi or Coles brand 1L tubs or wait for Sara Lee tubs to go on special.

      • What about for vanilla?

        • +1

Probably significantly worse as there aren't things like nuts inside. Personally, I don't buy Connoisseur for flavours I can buy elsewhere. You can compare the fat content between brands in store or online.

  • +1
  • Looking forward to this. Pistachio is the best!!

    • Have you eaten both the Connoisseur and the Destination Italy versions?

      • No,I haven't try destination Italy never seen this brand before I'll find it next time.🙂

      • I tried Destination Italy once and couldn't have more than a couple of spoonfuls as it was too sweet. Can't find Connoisseur in stock anywhere near me unfortunately but their now discontinued pistachio ice cream sticks were amazing!!

        • +1

Interesting. I'm eating the Connoisseur Pistachio tub now and it's pretty weak. I won't be buying it again. This has 22.5% sugar versus the Destination Italy's 25% sugar which I haven't tried yet. I've only had their Tiramisu gelato (26% sugar) and thought it was quite good, but too expensive to buy regularly.

    • I checked 10 Coles stores nearby through Coles app, no stock around Sydney City …

  • When these become $7 on sale, people will lament how they used to be $6.

    • $6 is unique now.
Colesworth generally discount to $7.20. IGA is the only one still doing $6 on a regular basis.
This deal at Coles I haven't seen for a long time now.

  • This latest Choice test gives this an F. Two budget varieties seem to be the winners (from Coles & Aldi).

There were some of the pistachio flavor at my local last night and I got a couple.

It's f'ing delicious. I'm gonna go back and fill my freezer with every tub I can get.

EDIT: There were no more left :(

  • +2

If you are chasing Pistachio, or really want this price for the next month and don't have the freezer space, go to the service counter and ask for a Rain Check.
They will give you a note basically guaranteeing the price for the next month.

It will need to be out of stock of course.

    • Genius!

I just went and got one. Thanks!

      • +1

It's a boomer hack that everyone has forgotten about.
I honestly never got one till the last $6 special they had like a year ago and no peanut butter flavour could be found anywhere. I had three rainchecks from three different stores. (I was actually trying to find somewhere with stock)
I think it was the first store that asked if I wanted a raincheck and reminded me it was still a thing, so I got one from every store I tried that night.

        • I had no idea they were still a thing so thanks for the reminder.

I'm glad you got your peanut ice creams in the end, well done lol

  • Hopefully I'll forget about the recent skimpflation recipe changes to see if I can taste a difference when I get the tubs I just bought.

  • vanilla for the win - tho i prefer aldi kapiti version.
