Everytime I go check if the gold green bambino is sub $200 and everytime I am disappoint 🤣

Hi Disappointed, I'm Chazzozz. Glad to meet you!

One day Disappointed will be Pleasantly Surprised

  • I'm curious for anyone who owns similar models in both Seiko & Orient whether you can notice any appreciable difference between them. Like, is there any obvious better quality of one over the other? Are size & weight the same? Does the Orient movement run much the same as the Seiko?

    • What's the similar Seiko auto 200M dive watch in this price bracket though? There isn't one.

      • You've got a fair point, although Ryugen did a top-notch job of answering the question. It's obvious the value proposition of an Orient is far better than a Seiko of equivalent specs due to the price disparity…plus the fact you can be assured the Orient's dial, indexes, & bezel will line up properly.

I don't have a Seiko but have dug into this topic a bit. IFor reference, I did not get the above-mentioned models. I opted to pay a bit more ($368) for the Sapphire glass version with the JDM day wheel: https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B09G6YKDJP?

At this price range, you'd be comparing the F6922 movement to Seikos 4R36. Based on what I can find on Seiko, playing around with my colleagues Seikos and my experience with the Orient, the inhouse Orient movement is a big draw. It's mad accurate for a budget mechanical and does offer day/date functionality. It will run laps on Seiko's cheaper, workhorse NH35/34 (99% of all China brands). The biggest ding against Orient is serviceability. If anything ever goes wrong with your watch, prepare to jump hoops for servicing in Aus or take a nice trip to Japan.

Quality of the watch itself, my Mako is faultless in the body. I will ding the bracelet for opting for cheaper hollow ends but it is what it is, will probably upgrade to a Jubilee or something later. Seiko bracelets are also notoriously garbage, with most models providing limited to nil micro adjustments.

According to my research, Orient QC is meant to be top notch and much better than Seikos budget models. All I can say is my watch has had 0 issues, both from a fault perspective and from a QC perspective (rotating dial lines up perfectly, wind feels tight, running time as advertised, +/- WELL within specs (actually crazily accurate). Having worn and played with my colleague's mid-range Seiko (Samurai, Turtle etc etc), they feel nice and quality, weighty and the bracelet was quite good….but that those were about 1.5 - 2x the price of my Mako.

      • Thanks, exactly the information I was looking for!

      • I've got the orient with JDM and saphire glass as well. It's pretty nice! Blue bezel and dial.
        I think it's a kamasu.

    • Not a huge sample size but I have multiple Seiko divers (5 Sports, special edition King and non-King Turtles and Samurais), and a red Kamatsu (I paid ~$350). Imo dial, indices and lume application are noticably better/sharper on the Kamatsu.
Bracelet wise I wanna say Orient is also slightly better but could be more refined still.
The online concesus seems to say lume quality is better on Seikos but I haven’t noticed the difference.
You’re also getting Saphire with the Kamatsu and Hardlex on most Seikos of the similar prices.
I tend to like the Seiko design language more but it baffles me that they still couldn’t get their bezel, indices alignment and lume application right (ie crooked) even on the more exxy Samurais and Turtles. I haven’t bought any recent releases in the last 2 years though so don’t know if they’ve gotten better.

    • I think Orient has better QC. 25% of the orient watches I’ve gotten have alignment issues. 50% of Seiko watches I’ve gotten have alignment issues (some of them horrifically so).

    • It depends, is misaligned bezel a pro or con?

      Haha I kid I kid.

I'm patiently waiting for the bambino with blue hands

  • Orient Kamasu Red has been on my list for sometime now. I can even consider Mako red but sadly both are not any special right now :(

    • +1

Same waiting for green kamasu, missed out last time, hopefully there is a deal on it shortly.

      • I got one from last time, however, every person I have shown it to says its blue and not green.

    • You won’t regret it when you get it. Just factor in a new strap also.

    • Weee…just scored Kamasu red for $380 from Amazon.

  • Would be a great set of watches the mako and the bambino. I've grabbed a kamasu which is like the mako but saphire glass. Would have grabbed that bambino but on my watch hunting adventures I discovered the orient star open heart models and now must save and/or wait for a deal on those.

  • These are beautiful watches. I own 3 for 7-8 years, no issues. But yeah service will be a Japan trip I'm sure!

  • Damn been eyeing the Pepsi watch for a while but have too many watches :(

  • We have Coke at home….

    • I mainly just drink beer.

  • +1

I've noticed that there is also a buy two, save 9% coupon showing up on these watches. I guess if someone really wants to start building a watch collection, now is a good time!

I personally have the Mako in blue and it's been a great watch. Zero problems. My only genuine complaint is that the crown is pretty smooth and therefore offers very little grip, plus the crown is recessed into the case a bit so this makes it even worse. I have relatively large hands and find it difficult to wind it up all the way without a bit of a struggle. But that's a fairly minor issue when the rest of the watch has been such good quality for a pretty decent price point.

    • +1

Good points, not fairly minor when this has one of many autos requiring setting time afresh, one reason why I prefer autos with no complications and easy to wind crown.
, one of the reasons I've been staying away from the orients for so long..

  • For the Bambino, could someone help me find some nicer bands online? I bought it a while ago for my father but he has not found any.
