Looking to stream desktop via Moonlight for some emulation is this a good option or should I look at the Nvidia Shield Pro for way more

    • FS 4KM should be plenty, shield pro would be over-kill, but is a superior product in every respect.

They are trying to stop sideloading from next year.
So if that is your purpose of buying do some research

    • hmm I wanted to buy this for sideloading.. Is there an alternative you or anyone else could recommend?

      • Xiaomi recently released a tv stick 2nd gen - maybe worth looking at if you still want 'portable without a hdmi cable'

      • This Very simple setup, to load up not just a customer loader (projectivy is king imo), but also stops auto-updates so you can side load forever through downloader by aftvnews

    • They are trying to stop sideloading from next year.

I think only for the new OS next year.

      • you mean Vega OS? It is not planned to be rolled out to the existing Firesticks. There is newer version of Firestick, Firestick Select with the new OS

        • Is this one already Vega OS?

          • @superforever: nope, Vega OS is not slated to be rolled out for existing firestick range. Amazon have also confirmed that they will still continue Android based firestick devices as well

        • why would they go with Vega OS?

there's no reason to buy Firestick if you can't sideload
and just better to get any other devices with android OS / google tv

only reason people got firestick is that you get a somewhat powerful that is cheap
and runs a standard OS that allows sideloading

I think the purchases are gonna drop for Firesticks with Vega OS

    • Someone needs to work on a LineageOS for the Firestick! Now There's a thought!

      • They constantly block you with updates

        • who blocks and why?

    • Oh damn. Is there any news of whether it will affect old units or only moving forward?

    • Do you mean google with Android 16 or Amazon with Vega OS? Neither should impact the current firestick lines.

  • I know nothing about this device. I am from the 19th century.

Can I use this to stream movies from my desktop PC to my smart TVs? I tried Plex two weeks ago but couldn’t get the movies to play (though they worked fine on our phones and tablets). Our LG CX and high-end Hisense could only display the hard drive’s contents.

Plex fully refunded me. Any suggestions for alternatives so we don’t have to keep carting hard drives around the house?

    • if streaming movies from your desktop to smart TV is something you use very often I would suggest you look into investing into a NAS (a simple google search will show a lot of out of the box options). It is much pricier compared to a this but will be a more reliable and robust solution.

On a side note, the movie not playing on your TV might be due to the TV not having the proper codec. Turning on transcoding on the plex server (which I assume is your PC) should have helped. Plex support should have wlked you through this, after all you were a paying customer.

      • Thanks - I’ll research NAS.

Plex were hopeless in terms of support. I emailed them about the problem and they immediately initiated a refund.

Let me know if you need any help with NAS, happy to help.

          • @nokia3660: I appreciate the offer. What’s a straightforward system that I could just plug in and play? We have bunch of 4TB hard drives with our media files but are about to take delivery of a single 24TB Seagate, which will hopefully suffice to hold everything.

            • +1

@Chris17: A NAS will act as a central storage for your data and can be accessed across all your devices simultaneously. The most user friendly one is Synology with well polished first party apps. It is not the absolute bang for the buck, but you pay for the simplicity and easy of use. Fro any NAS you would have to supply your own HDD, but I see that you have got it covered.

    • Just switch on file sharing on the folder your movies are on your pc.
Then use kodi on the tv and add the share to kodi as a movies folder.
Use your windows username/password to connect to the share in kodi.

      Free, simple and just works.

  • I just bought this but am i screwed if they want to stop side loading?

      • Yeah, I think the current FireTV still base on andriod, still allow sideloading apps.

        • From the looks of it the vega os firesticks will lock down things. But the current gens probs won't be chnaged over to vega os.

          • +1

@deebee8: for vega os, even if they don't lock it down there is no other source to get the .vpkg files for now. I am pretty sure firestick with vega os won't be a big a hit as the andriod ones since sideloading has been the main draw for these devices.

        • Just settings it up, no problem sideloading Stremio

          • @superforever: can you install/sideload youtube app and casting?

can you install sideload google play apps?

Also how does amazon app store compared to google store?
            any popular apps missing?

  • what does the with 20% mean? Can you get 20% off the $69?

  • Thanks, ordered after the Topcashback promo. Hope it all tracks ok.

  • Cheers, needed another one (giving my old 4K to FIL). Finally got around to setting up Stremio - works a treat!

  • Can get it bundled with the Made for Amazon USB Power Cable (usually $29.95 on its own) for an extra $5.50

    https://amzn.asia/d/8VQ8csm

    • What is the difference to plug the USB cable directly into the TV USB port?

      • Some USB ports don't provide enough power for the Firestick - this thing acts a bit like a battery/booster to give the Firestick enough power to run

Reviews do mention to be careful when Firestick does firmware updates and recommends plugging the Firestick into a proper USB power plug when doing firmware updates to be safe

        • OK, didn't know this thing have battery in it.

        • Interesting. I've never had an issue with powering a Fire Stick off the built in USB, but I guess if you have a TV with an underpowered port, it may br helpful.

Perhaps it's because I only play 4K content on my 4K monitor (which probably has sufficient power) - usually I just play 1080P, because the TVs I'm using are 1080P still.

Also can bundle with the "Amazon Ethernet Adapter for Amazon Fire TV Devices" adaptor for the extra $5.50. (AU$74)
    https://www.amazon.com.au/Stick-Amazon-Ethernet-Adapter-Devi…

    • Should have bought this one instead for $5 more, oh well.

      • it's probably not faster than the built in wifi but I think its best to remove wifi devices whenever you can.
