Note that this is the 7200 RPM version. Some people have reported that the drives arrive in just the original packaging from Amazon US. Also I’m not sure how Amazon US will handle warranty claims.

If you prefer local stock, you can get the 5400 RPM version for $269 from Centre com or scorptec.

I’ve also seen people trying to sell this drive for over $200 after 5–6 years of use - because apparently, drives have eternal life and somehow remain “in perfect condition” after a few years of “light use,” even when smartctl shows over 40,000 hours of actual runtime.

Buying used Seagate hard drives is sketchy at the moment. There's an article out there that SMART and FARM data (Seagate-specific HDD stats) can be cleared. Apparently there's also lots of used drives from the Chia mining era being sold now. I've purchased three "factory refurbished" drives recently with zero SMART and FARM hours that suddenly started having SMART errors after burning-in and had to return. I ended up buying this drive new at full price.

      • I'd have thought buying used hard drives was sketchy in general

if you want cheaper $ per TB, AND you still want NAS grade, the Western digital 20tb reds are priced better, currently at $29.59 per tb (link. However understandably it's a higher upfront cost.

Also keep in mind that hdd prices are pretty high atm, if you can wait, then i recommend doing so…if you can't wait then the above is probably one of the better deals for a nas grade drive.

Good find. Regarding the HDD price, I’ve shared the following in my other post:
      According to Forbes:
In 2025, average sales prices (ASPs) of HDDs are up 8.4% quarter-over-quarter and about 17% higher than two years ago. Western Digital and other manufacturers recently raised prices again in late 2025 due to continued strong demand and shipping delays—sometimes as long as 10 weeks—driven by hyperscale and enterprise deployments.

yeah i'm still upvoting yours because many people don't have $500+ to splash upfront on a single drive, so your deal is still a good for that $200-$300 bracket.

They've been bonkers-high for years. I got 2x16TB Ironwolfs in 2023 for $473, Glad I stocked up when I did because even this 8TB is over 2x as much per TB as when I bought!

I actually don't anticipate them coming down again and I expect it's because M2 SSDs have become ubiquitous in home computing, so platter drives are pretty much an enterprise thing now, meaning there's fewer produced and companies can charge more for them.

      • it has been bonkers for years, but usually hdd prices have fluctuations based on industry factors. As Kehuau pointed out, right now the big places buying up all the hdd's on mass is large scale enterprise deployments, which results in limited supply for the general consumer.

I'm on the fence on if they will return to the prices they were before, it all depends on supply and demand.

I bought the same HDD five years ago for $279. It’s probably the only tech item I’ve seen that’s managed to retain its price over such a long period.

    • +3

Considering the insane inflation over the past two years, $279 might have been worth more five years ago! Haha.

      • +1

Yeah, but the depreciation of a tech item should almost always outpace inflation—at least that's been true for nearly everything I've seen, except this!

  • I bought 2 of this in 2023 for $129.63 each one! Also in Amazon AU but 3rd party seller. Such a great deal that was

  • Is there a big performance and reliability difference between 7200 and 5400?

    • I don’t think so. I prefer the 5400 version since it’s quieter.

  • Can these be used for NVRs?

    • Short answer is yes. But WD Purple or Seagate SkyHawk should be your choice if you need drives for NVRs.

  • I just had a look at my Amazon account and my existing 12 TB 7200RPM Ironwolf that I am currently using was bought in April 2023 from Amazon for $189

    • This. It happened over night. I think not many were after a HHD as SSD was hitting at time low during the time. Even I myself didn't order as I didn't need more plus my poor budget spending at the time.
