Advice on Home Security System. Purchasing a New Home

Hi All,

Just got my first home. And was wondering if people could share tips or product recommendations for their home security system

I want it to have security cameras, indoor motion detection and alarms if there's break-in

Also would prefer it, if there's local storage as opposed to cloud with mobile connectivity

What sorta budget did you guys spend and what do you have

It's a single Storey house, the back area is wide open with a large glass sliding door, and was wondering if I could target a break-in should it happen

Also have setup IT stuff which segments my network, so would love a Network solution

Feel free to ask me questions

  • Don't get budget spend more and have a reliable system

    Dahua Tioc best system

    • Can you please share the exact model of the stuff you have

      • Dahua Tioc 2 one at front and back and the rest hikvision

  • I suggest to have two systems one to handle the security alarm and alerting and a CCTV system.
There is lots of option in these areas, I use Bosch security alarm system with reporting to an app and Hikvision for the hardwired 4k cameras with a UPS for back up power.
If you have concerns with glass doors/windows there is the option to have glass break added to the alarm system.

    • Can you please share the exact model of the stuff you have

      • I have the Bosch solution 6000 hard wired (no wifi) trusted for commercial use also.
The PIR sensors I use Bosch Blue Line Tritech PIR Detectors, have not false alarmed in the 6+ years of operating.
Bosch Glass Break Detector DS1101i if required, not very expensive these days.
iFob Control is the app that you can add to the system to have remote alerts and arming/disarming, I think from memory they have a lifetime option too.

The CCTV I use Hikvision NVR and cameras 4K, if you can try to take advantage of the newer tech (ColorVu) it's amazing to have color in the dark.
Hikvision, Dahua are two great brands. Dahua is getting popular as you get a lot for your money.
I would also stick to a NVR over a NAS for CCV recordings due to cost, reliability and features.

        Hope this helps.

  • You will never use it, don’t bother and spend the money elsewhere

  • For local storage with mobile access, there are plenty of decent NVR-based systems that'll do the job. Most people end up spending somewhere between $1000-3000 depending on coverage.
That sliding door is definitely worth prioritising - cameras and sensors there make sense. If you're comfortable with IT stuff, DIY installation can save you a fair bit.

    • Would I need an NVR if I intend to use a NAS, that way I have redundancy and can do other stuff like my Google Drive export, schedule backups, etc. Also what type of security camera is ideal for outdoor home monitoring, (dome or turret or bullet?). Would you mind sharing a setup that you have or recommend

      • If you've already got a NAS, you can definitely skip the NVR, just make sure the NAS has enough grunt to handle the camera feeds.
For outdoor cameras, turrets have a good field of view, less prone to glare than domes, and harder to knock about than bullets. Bullets work well if you need longer range coverage though.
