MSY vs Lenovo System?

Hi,
I'm trying to decide between two desktop systems - Both have similar specs. Anyone got an opinion on which has better build quality / warranty etc? It's for simple tasks like the kids games and just a touch of video editing.

The 2 are:

MSY Intel-PowerValue (Intel Core i3-3220 3.30GHz $625 after RAM upgrade) - http://www.msy.com.au/SYSTEMS/INTELAMD-PowerValue.pdf

&

Lenovo M72e (Configured to be i3-3220 $653 with 8GB RAM & L197 wide monitor, after discount if I buy this w/end) - http://shopap.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/auweb/Leno…

MSY has HD5450 graphics card, Lenovo only has onboard graphics. MSY has 1TB HDD, Lenovo only 500GB (But my system right now has 250GB that isn't even used!)
AOC Monitor with MSY, Lenovo monitor with Lenovo.

Hmmm…Brand name vs MSY!

  • Lenovo is not that great brand for my experience with their note book. It's hard to say which one is better, but I would go with MSY since it come with HD5450 graphics card with cheaper price. If you are close to MSY, it would be easier to claim when any problem come up within the warranty.

    • Lenovo may not be a great brand but MSY is NOT a BRAND!

You know it's possible to get MSY to build a system for you right? You simply email them a list of parts that you want and instruct them to build it for you.

It's much better than their "set menu" of systems which seem to incorporate all but the worst and shitty parts — like SHAW cases and power supplies.

    http://www.msy.com.au/Parts/PARTS.pdf

    Part Price
    Intel i3-3220 $117
    AsRock B75M-DGS $59
    4G Kit 1600 G.Skill Ripjaws-X $33
    Seagate SATA3 1TB $73
    Coolermaster RC330 with PSU $61
SATA DVD RW LG or Samsung $19
    23" Acer V230HLbd LCD $139
    64bit Win7 Home Premium 93

    $594 total + $70 building fee

If too expensive, you can always downgrade the parts:

Drop the LCD screen to a 21.5 inch HP L2201X which is only $105. (Save $34)
Remove the DVD burner (but salvage one from old computer) (save $19)
Downgrade to a smaller Seagate 500GB HDD $58 (save $15)

    • scrimshaw is right, might as well buy the parts and build it yourself. Stay the hell away from shaw.

Where abouts in sydney do you live seanb? If you're near my end, i'll be happy to help build it with you.

The main difference between building it yourself and buying it premade is if something goes wrong, you just take it to their service centre instead of wasting hours diagnosing the problems yourself

In my mind the poll should be Build your own VS lenovo

EDIT: also, consider buying from a slighter "better" computer store, like arc.

  • I bought an i3 system from Dell Vostro Slim Tower 260 around Jan last year, paid $399.

    4GB + 2nd gen i3 2100 + 500GB 7200 RPM + DVD-RW + Win7 Pro + no monitor + free delivery

  • i had to vote lenovo on the poll, because it's not msy

  • Build it yourself. Its easy, otherwise I'd second Scrimshaw's build with one change, the mobo to an Asrock B75M-PRO 3, more slots and ports which may come in handy down the track.

  • Lenovo has taken a serious dive in quality since 2009 and both onsite and return-to-base warranty repairs are having record SNAFUs.

Read these four pages of horror stories from Whirlpool Forums on Lenovo service and you might well see a pattern.

Even though the quality of Lenovo machines does seem to have deteriorated in recent years, I still think that the additional tools and utilities they provide are of significant value. The Thinkvantage utilities can cause their own issues on occasion, but they're more often than not a great plus.

As for service, I had an issue recently with one of my Thinkpads, and the service for my area at least was performed by Unisys. The techs themselves were great, however the management and communication of the fault was very poor. The problem was fully resolved though.

I can't speak for MSY customer service and support as I've only ever stood in their long line for sales, but for me personally the issues that tend to crop up with 'yum cha' computers, in terms of conflicts with drivers and between devices etc, are just too much of a pain.
