New eBay Adjustment Charges for Selling Account - How Do You Send Your Items? Auspost? Courier? Another Method?

So recently I've been getting loads of extra charges in my ebay account. "Adjustment ID:" as an example i'll use " Additional fee based on actual size:1.7KG 32x25x17cm".

Prior to this for the last year or so, my local Post Office would be very relaxed about what they would accept to scan and lodge. Usually I'd use the prepaid small package selection on eBay for the postage label when selling and printing off the label. Dont get me wrong - I wouldnt be sending items which are 30kg and 5m x 5m x 5m, but sometimes I would go a little over what the measurements are on ebay. They (at the PO) would scan the package and off it goes, job done. But now it looks like every single lodgement is scanned for the precise measurements and weight when processed at a depot down the track (and thus the adjustment charges). Fair enough I guess.

For me personally paying X more in postage kills my ebay selling. Plus I cant say I am thrilled with the idea of getting a tape measure every time I box up an item and need to send it off.

It made me wonder who is in the same boat and if other people are using simply better alternatives to my manual postage label from ebay and then goto the Post Office to send. Or maybe there isnt.

My volume is anything between 1 and 10 items per week on average. So not enough to warranty a super commercial solution. But enough to potentially look at what else is there.

Any advice welcomed from people in similar boats.

    1. ymmv but some here keep creating new accounts to make use of this offer for 12 weeks of band 3 discounts

    2. just clarifying are you using the auspost cartons, or using own box but putting label on it? Nearly every order I send is unique size, so i found using australia post e-parcel system better than using prepaid labels/bags.

    3. tape measure - i am very honest with my declaration of weight and sizes - and have been wrongfully accused 5-6 times now of under declaration by the robot scanner. I've had proof every time as I have a 2 ruler setup and take photo of the package and scale and got a refund. Sure it takes a little time but my workflow is quite well tuned now so its really a non-issue. Imo taking photos of the package/and contents also helps for claims of wrong items shipped, items short shipped , breakages etc.

    4. go to post office
You're still a little small scale to use it, but if you do increase your output, it may make more sense to schedule a pickup by australia post's trucks.

    5. alternatives

back in the day i used sendle, it was great, had a choice of couriers and etas and the price WAS decently cheaper - these days though some drivers dont even rock up, or packages take forever, and they cant service PO boxes - for these reasons I still begrudgingly use australia post.

    • Thanks JW!

1 - i'll check it out. I have seen this before and I havent yet taken the plunge - but i'll give it a crack
2 - yes my own unique box sizes
3 - that does sound exhausting!
4 - I didnt know that was an option - but i'll be the first to admit i'm small fry
5 - yeah I know of Sendle - never used it myself. Tell you what - those prices are insanely attractive! Shame you have had a bad experience though

      Cheers

  • depends on what your charging for postage. if you know the items weight easier to price the postage cost. There is a new <250 limits and the usual <500g or <1kg. Bulkier item i would add 10% or more to account for packaging cost as well.

i stopped using ebay postage caluator as it was completly wrong or always underquoted the postage cost.

    • you mean what I charge for postage in the listing for the buyer? I normally do free postage to attract more buyers than do a like-for-like postage cost.

      • maybe work that into your pricing.

Auspost was making me so mad with the adjustment charges. Personally, I use Aramex directly for shipping items, I know that it's extremely controversial. Personally, I have had nothing short of an excellent experience with Aramex that CouriersPlease/Sendle and AusPost couldn't provide me. I have always had my couriers phone number so if there is any issues with pickups I can just call my courier, and the depot manager and I also have each others numbers/emails so we can contact each other if any issues arise. The only depot that will give adjustment charges in the Aramex network is their Sydney depot, in my experience. All the rest will not check, and yes I have send items that are 4-5kg a few times and booked it as a 500gm-1kg parcel and had no upcharges. If I am being completely honest though, I do live near a small depot that gets close to no outgoing freight, they only have about 6-7 customers that send outgoing freight including me, so we all get really great support from them, so if you are near one of the large depots (Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane, etc) then I think the experience would be very different. Sendle is fine, IF you have a good CouriersPlease driver as most parcels will go to them (I do not have a good driver, hence I stopped using them). Sendle will contract some items out to Aramex however, they do not utilise Aramex's full network, which is also something to keep in mind. I have been using Aramex for over a year now, and never had a missed pickup by them, CouriersPlease/Sendle is another story, that driver would only ever collect from me once a week.
I also give my customers options, if they want to pay for the difference between Aramex and AusPost, they definitely can, although I have only ever had one person do that.

    • Ah - for me personally it doesnt look like Sendel, CP, Aramex service my location (I'm 50km from the CBD) when I attempt to create a quote. Awesome that you're getting good service though for your location/situation

I sell a couple of thousand items on eBay per year and almost always use Australia Post.

Yes, they laser scan and weigh every package. If I'm 0.5cm out (always remember to round up) they'll send a bill to MyPost Business if the size difference bumps up the cost.

You now need to be exact in your measurements. Yes, that means weighing and measuring every single package.

Also note that AP can make mistakes. I sent a sub 250g package containing a coin. I got a bill saying it was a large box weighing 5kg+. I contacted AP support and had the underpayment reversed. What I suspect happened is my package was laying on top of another, and my barcode got scanned along with the large package.

Have a look at 5kg satchels. If your item is small it's a much cheaper way of sending an item rather than paying by weight. Put the box in the bag and it can basically be half price for 5kg.

Consider signing up to MyPost Business. It's free. You get auto import of eBay sales into the system. Pay and print through MyPost, and you get discounts on all parcels the more you send.

    • +1 re satchels. I might stock up on the different sizes and see what I can get away with.
Yeah I've just done the OB MyPost Business promo code - so i'll give that a crack too

      Cheers!

      • The other thing you can do is get various standard size boxes from a packaging shop in your city/town. I used to harvest free boxes from Bunnings but now rarely do so, as the size didn't always meet my needs, the boxes were all different sizes, and at $1 to $3 per box it wasn't really worth the effort.

    • what level are you on with mypost business if you don't mind me asking. is 1000 enough for level 5?

      • +1

I'm usually on level 3. Never reached level 4. One annoying feature of AP's system is there's nowhere in MyPost to see how much was spent in the last 30 or 365 days. The change in discount level just suddenly pops up. Band 5 is $2k+ in four weeks.

Quite a few of my sales are sent via letters so don't get registered in MyPost.

  • Sign up for Mypost business
Buy bubble mailers, because they fit way more than satchels. You can use generic ones as long as they are the same size as the corresponding ausposts ones. Then just select the small, medium or large size instead of typing the dimensions. Also works with boxes. Items must be under 5kg.
Let me know if that didn't make sense - I'm sleepy.

  • faced same but with sendle and also from Sept which rarely happened before. so far by fighting:
    - will receive one off "goodwill" refund from sendle after one month dispute
    - got courtesy refund from ebay as "royal" customer after chased up once (ebay: sorry forgot)
    - pending investigation x3 with sendle (long waiting game)

the measurement provided by Courier Please is so ridiculous either large flat size like coffee table or very heavy in small size like concrete, obviously wrong but they insisted normal due to "computer said / measured".
I assume ebay may support them doing these doggy things since all adjustments are sneakily charged, mixed with normal postage labels without any notification. If you don't regularly review transactions, quite hard to notice such overcharges.
