Should I Buy The Original PS5 or The PS5 Slim?

Hey everyone,
I’m planning to buy a PS5 soon and noticed that both the original PS5 and the PS5 Slim are now available at similar prices depending on the deal.

I’d love to hear your thoughts — which one would you go for and why?

From what I can see:

  • Original PS5: bulkier but has slightly better cooling and can be upgraded easily.

  • PS5 Slim: smaller, lighter, less power use, but no USB-A at the back and uses the new detachable disc drive.

I mainly play story games and a bit of FIFA, and I’m not too fussed about size — just want the best long-term value.

Any opinions from people who’ve owned or used both?

PS5 Slim has a larger SSD. I never even noticed my PS5 Slim firing up the fans when playing games, so I don't think cooling is a problem.

    • The new Slims are going back down to 825 GB.

      • That model is for the US. If you buy in Australia now it won't be the updated 825gb model.

It’s rolling out everywhere once 1TB stock depletes.

          • @Hybroid: Yeah so buy now is what Im saying.

    • I have the OG PS5 and never heard the fans kick in, only heard them if I forgotten to open the cabinet door !!

  • I think the original is better but you should buy the slim as it has higher trade value or will be accepted as a trade in for longer when you no longer want it.

They both function the exact same and the minor differences aren’t going to impact you. The original isn’t sold new anymore with warranty, so get the Slim with warranty. That matters the most.

  • Maybe the Slim will be worth more in the future because it's released later.
I think overall I don't think the difference will be big so just choose whatever's easier or you like the look better

The original has more copper in it so you'll get better scrap value one day.

  • I have a launch console.

The usb-a in the back is not noteworthy. Only real need for it is to connect a PSVR1 headset if I'm not forgetting anything. I have only connected an external ssd for PS4 games, and all it meant was that I had to choose the USB-A cable over the USB-C cable that I had.

There is really no real difference between the two. If you can get the Slim with a 1tb drive, get that. There is no "long-term value". Buy one, money out of your pocket.

  • You are bit late for the party, might as well wait for Ps6

        1. But still, hardly too late to get a PS5.
        • OP already waited 5 years, in 2 more years Op can either get ps5 cheaper or Ps6.😉

  • PS5 Slim: smaller, lighter, less power use, but no USB-A at the back

Well, I dont know what PS5 I got a few days ago. Mine has 2x USB-A ports on the back.

and uses the new detachable disc drive.

Like that is a bad thing. If it fails, just replace the drive.

  • Depending whether you use a wireless headset that comes with a usb-a dongle, a PS5 maybe the way to go.

  • Thank you very much
