[VIC] Myki Off-Peak Travel 6pm-3am Daily: 2-Hour Ticket $5.50 / $2.75 Concession @ Public Transport Victoria

151

Posting for visibility after @Neil's comment. I personally had no idea about this "hack", so I'll be making use of it now.

Essentially, if you tap on after 6 pm, you can travel until 3 am the next day on a "two-hour" ticket. This gives you up to nine hours of travel for the price of two hours. Now you only get the most value out of this if you haven't already tapped on, on the same day; otherwise, you'll be charged a full fare.

This applies to every day of the week; however, seniors and kids under 5 get free weekend travel regardless.

Enjoy!

Probably you were in the CBD free tram zone?
Otherwise I don’t see such situations in the train station or bus….

Starting to think bots have infiltrated ozb

      Open your eyes?

    • Its bad on the Vline, either look menancing, ignore the guy or pretend to be asleep, them bam you don't need to pay…

  • +10

It's been around ever since I can remember, simply because it's considered off-peak (different to weekend off-peak) from 6 PM until the last service.

I personally had no idea about this "hack"

    It's not a "hack"…

It's always been this way since it started… They even advertised it….

This is just an FYI post, not a bargain…

      • deflection ?

  • Sydney definitely needs to follow.

    • +7

Not really, Sydney has off-peak during the day (weekdays after 10am - 3pm & again after 7pm until last service), Melbourne doesn't.
Weekdays are peak all day until 6pm in Melbourne, other than trains, which are free if you tap off by 7:15am.
We (Melb) only have off-peak at 6pm until last service, all services, on weekdays and cheaper weekend rates.

    • Sydney needs to have a night network first.

Lmfao ive been doing this since the paper ticket days when 'The Met' was still a thing

    • I didn’t know about it.

    • Old people are old.
And for a while one of the metcards allowed us to print for free at school.

    not a bargain.

        You save yourself money.

        No you don't.

It's the normal price for Myki after 6pm… Always has been…

      • +4

Your local shopping centre has free A/C. You save yourself money.

      • +6

They've openly been advertising this on their website, flyers and, more recently billboards for decades. It's not a "hack" it's the off peak rate, like most public transport systems around the world.

Kids under 5 are free all the time, not just weekends

With the way things are currently going in Melbourne, I wouldn't want to travel on public transport after 6pm anyway…

    • Isn't there a machete bin in each train?

      • +2

A Danny Trejo bin? In Melbourne? That would be great for tourism.

      • +1

Not sure even we could 'afford' that at 350k each

        • +1

Jacinta will just add another 70% parking tax increase to cover it…

    • +2

Probably better than in Sydney where the machete is delivered right to your home.

I can't drive, so I absolutely need public transport. But if I'm out till late, say after 10:00, I take an Uber home.

I wouldn't have given it a second thought 5 years ago.

But it's not because of public transport. I think our public transport is generally safe. It's the 20 minute walk back home from the station that's the problem. Actually… it's the 20 minute walk from the train door to my door that's the problem.

Everyone has different views and can think and vote whichever way they want.

Call me ignorant I live in Melbourne but didn't know about this. So thank you OP for the effort posting this :)

  • +2

No thanks, ill get hacked to death durning peak hour, thank you very much

I prefer 50c all public transports nationwide …

As far as I’m aware, the majority of bus users aren’t tapping on anyway.

Oddly enough I actually saw Myki inspectors on a bus for the very first time a few days ago. I've seen them hang around The Pines SC (Doncaster East/Templestowe) a few times before but this time they got on the 901 bus, nabbed someone, and then got off at Greensborough.

      • There's always been myki inspectors on busses.

        especially near certain high schools.

There must be a blitz going on at the moment - I've never seen inspectors on the Glen Waverley line for the past ~3 years, but they were out in force this morning.

They got a prick dressed in RM Williams boots who had cut in front of me to get on the train. That's karma for you! Apparently, he could afford nice clothes and shoes but not a train ticket. It was even funnier watching the exchange - he asked the inspectors "Myki? What's a Myki?" and then later pretended to look in his bag for something…
