20%-40% Discount When Purchasing between 15,000 and 250,000 Velocity Points @ Velocity Frequent Flyer

150

Velocity are running a Velocity Points promo until 21 October.

  • 20% discount when you purchase 15k - 80k points
  • 30% discount when you purchase 90k - 150k points
  • 35% discount when you purchase 160k - 200k points
  • 40% discount when you purchase 210k - 250k points

Most people will agree that buying points should only be used if you are just short of a rewards flight redemption, and you shouldn't buy them to bank them in your Velocity account.

Recently some changes in the Velocity program have made the Velocity program less valuable to members:
- As seen recently, Velocity members can no longer use Velocity points to book business class on United Airlines,
- Business Class rewards seats on Singapore airlines between Sydney/Melbourne/Perth and Singapore is non-existent.

250k Velocity Points for $3501 = 161290 KrisFlyer points. 162k KrisFlyer points is enough to fly two people return in business class from Perth to much of South East Asia including Hong Kong. The cash fare for the same return flight to Hong Kong would be ~$14,000.

    • You forgot to include the booking fee (Airport/Government taxes) for about $1400. Still a good point!

Taxes are very low when booking via KF, only 100 bucks each way

The price is very high for me (I'm booking via KF from Brisbane to Paris).

          • @sanglt: Can't be, I booked on KF 2 days ago. Taxes are higher via Velocity.

          • +1

@sanglt: I don't think you are. $1400 is more like Qatar Airways via Velocity or Emirates using Qantas. Krisflyer fees and taxes are way lower.

I flew Paris to Brisbane in Business earlier this year and fees and taxes were €149. Sydney to London in First was only ~$125.

    • Thanks for this concrete example.

  • Buying points isn't something I do but they could be great value sometimes. Like the above example, MEL-SIn at the moment is 68,500 KF, so a return would cost you 137000 in KF which is 212,500 Velocity points. This will cost you about 3k in cash and $200 in taxes. Ballpark $3200-3300 return business MEL - SIN.

Comparing the cash tickets it ranges from $4300-6100 depending on the dates.

It's still a decent saving until 1st Nov, that's when KF gets devalued.

  • Does this ever makes sense if going on economy flights?

    • Not really

    • Very rarely. If it is expensive via cash, and cheap via points.

e.g. on QANTAS to Lord Howe Island.
      https://www.pointhacks.com.au/get-to-lord-howe-island-cheap/

    • Sometimes it can be during busy periods of the year. For example - my wife is travelling to Europe to visit family for Christmas. It was cheap to fly there with Turkish ($600ish) but the return was a lot higher (~1200) because it's December. We used 80k pts + $380 or so to get her home.

Surely 80k is around $800 (at 1c/pt), so including tax you still paid $1200?
And the best purchase rate, even if buying 250k pts costs more than 1c/pt, so it's definitely not worthwhile AFAICS.

1.4c is good value its what people are selling them for in classified

    • Personally I think they should be selling them for less nowadays. With the devaluation of redemptions, and now the limited partner airline redemptions with Velocity, plus the risk that your account could be suspended if they catch you - the points are worth less than that.

      • You can still get 2-3c worth out of a point. They shouldnt be selling privately at all to begin with.

I agree classifieds is way over priced and risky. I just meant this is a great deal compared to buying off classifieds.
