EB Games Price Match BullS**t - A Company Best Avoided Unless They Are Having A Mega Sale !

Has anyone ever had any success with EB Games price match or "we'll beat it" policy ?

I never have had them match or beat a price, I always end up walking out in frustration vowing never to return to their store.

The latest BS annoyance:

1) Do you price match
2) Yes
3) XYD in the same shopping centre has this game for XXX will you match it
4) Yes, but we need to verify that price
5) Will you call them, NO - they know our phone number and wont answer the phone
6) Can I call them and you listen in, NO
7) So you wont match the price, no we can't verify it.

I mean WTF !!!!

They expect me to get a written quote / price on a certain product before they will match it !!

And the time before they just refused to match the price because it was too low.

All instances of new release PC games.

Is this normal policy or just the MARION SA EBGAMES policy ????

Our local (in Vic) EB will ring but that won't price match unless the other store has the item in stock.
Haven't tried to price match there for quite a while though - and they didn't because the item wasn't in stock at k-mart.

Just found this on their website:

    "Price Matching

Does EB Games price match other competitors?

Of course we do! We will price match any local retail competitor that has the same product currently on sale at a lower price than ours. All we ask is that you bring in the competitors catalogue as proof and provided the competitor has it in-stock and on sale at the time of matching, we will honour that price! We'll even let you bring the product back under our 7-Day return guarantee if you don't like it! Unbeatable!

What's even better is that you can even trade-in your old console games and hardware* to lower the price even further! Why shop anywhere else!
    * Some exclusions apply, see stores for details."

  • Thanks for that chi, figures "All we ask is that you bring in the competitors catalogue as proof" - sounds like BS, I guess what they mean to say is "we match our competitors pricing when they put it in their catalogue".

Fortunately im getting too old for games and feel much more comfortable buying at JB HI-FI where there are actual adults around rather than lining up behind 20, 10 year olds at the counter at EB Games.

I know it's your choice - but I don't bother with price matching.

If one store is willing to sell it to me for a cheaper price, I don't see the reason as to why I would go to all the effort just to get it for the same price at another store.

However - if a retailer will beat the price (like Kmart, Officeworks) I figure it is worth the effort and will go through with it - because I will end up with the product even cheaper.

i agree 100% why bother when its only a price match and in this case you have to go thru all the hassle of them checking - meanwhile you just stand there twiddling your thumbs while they try to get thru. I can just hear the laughter at the other end - its EB on the line - do we tell them the price? Yep but tell em we are outta stock at the moment, then the customer will come here and buy it.

Based on my experience, it's quite random. Once I looked for price match because GAME didn't have stock. To my surprise, EB Games gave me the price match with no question asked.

EB Games and GAME have 7 days return policy. Some games are just not for me, even if I have chosen carefully and read reviews/ratings. If I bought these games in Kmart/Target, they are not refundable once the seal are broken. So I will go to EB Games or GAME for a price match and hope for the best. If they won't give the price match, I'll try few other branches. If still nothing, then I'll buy them from Kmart/Target.

    • I agree with you until the part where you are trying to get it even cheaper somewhere else (5% or 10% via Office Works, Harvey Norman or Kmart, etc.).
Price matching for cheaper prices at the expense of the original seller defeats the purpose of having a sale.

I would use price matching at other stores when I would like to get everything from under one roof- so out of convenience.
EG: Kmart has a sale on BBQ's and I can get it for the cheapest there. I have researched this and Bunning have the cheapest gas bottles, covers, and tool sets.
I get Kmart to price match Bunnings for my complete BBQ package.

      • Each to his/her own.

Personally I agree with you that I would not price match already-on-sale items, and would only do it if the other shop is too far to walk to. There's nothing wrong to ask for a price match I guess, as there's also nothing wrong for me to buy from the original seller at 5% more, to reward him/her to take initiative in creating a sale.,,

  • Ive only tried price matching their once, and it was because Kmart had this special on a game but didnt have any stock.

It was 40% of the game, no specific price, and i knew kmart had 0 stock so i didnt have high hopes. Went up, asked if they could price match it, he asked me if kmart had any stock, i said "not sure havnt looked". The guy said he would check with his boss, the boss said no worries (didnt even ring to see if they had stock or not). so i guess i was lucky!!

  • Yep EB price matched God Of War on PSP. Walked in with a Dick Smith catalogue here in VIC, they gave me the Dick Smith price and I was able to trade a game towards it. Payed a measley $2 in the end.

You can't trade games into Dick Smith that's for sure.

Also I could have taken up the 1 week return policy if I wanted to, so there are benefits from price matching at EB Games.

The problem is that all the EB Games stores are so different, you get good and bad ones unfortunately.

  • Agreed with Compass. EB price matched with BigW when I showed them the catalogue. They didn't even ring BigW as the games I wanted were sold out at BigW. So I guess a bit hit and miss…depend who serve you in the counter.
