think that is personal preference. I'd much rather get a 'free' flight than pay for it and get a 'free' upgrade to business

      • +11

This. The difference between "free" upgrade and a free ticket or hotel is that I would never usually purchase a business class flight, so I haven't saved money.

IDRC what the dollar value of the point redemption is, its unrealised value until it actually substitutes for AUD.

Free economy flights and hotels are the real money-saver, unless you use the points to get a flat-bed and sleep, whereby you can effectively eliminate accomodation for a day.

    • +18

Sometimes Economy Classic Rewards can be the difference between someone going on a trip, or not going at all.

Agree with the above - it comes down to personal preference.

    • How did you manage to book the RTW F?

      • +1

Over the phone as a 'Oneworld' Redemption - you are limited to 8 sectors, 1 surface transfer and 16 segments only on OW carriers (not partners)

Was also able to have the QF Hobart team release First Redemptions from MEL-LAX and from SIN-SYD (Platinum and above unwritten benefit)

        • That is an unbelievable benefit! The other sectors had availibility though? Any business or all first?

          • +1

@Davelovesdealz: For Platinum there must be International Business/First Sale Fares or for Platinum One International Business/First Saver Fares

You can call into an overseas call center but it takes a few days for a response, through Hobart its instant.

I have been able to get 4x First Return Redemptions from Australia to LHR at peak times in Christmas and in June through it.

Its the primary reason according to internal sources as to why they dont really release seats to the public, as most of the allocations are gone/reserved for this unwritten benefit.

            • @AircraftFreight: You were able to secure 4 seats in one booking or 1 seat at 4 different times?

              • @T-man: 4 seats in one booking

                • @AircraftFreight: Oh 😮 a friend of mine is Platinum and can sometimes ask them to release 1 or 2 seats, but he’s never been able to secure 4 seats, especially on popular routes to LHR and LAX.

        • This isn't entirely accurate. The rules of the oneworld classic flight reward are outlined in section 14.4 of the QFF T&Cs. It is not, for example, limited to one "surface transfer", nor does is it limited to eight sectors. And while it seems you may have booked a ticket that took you around the world, this fare doesn't require doing so to be valid.

Generally I value points at about 1c/pt. So therefore a CR from Perth is pretty much always cheaper.

But the main reason is the flexibility around cancellations.

    • +1

Agree it is the best use of points but not everyone has the time or availability to do RTW.

    • +6

So you pay more than me (cost of flight), but we both end up in the same place.

I end up with $1000+ extra spending money though for my travel. Seems like I get the better deal there.

      • +5

we all end up in the same place eventually ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    • +1

Some people will never fly and for them gift cards for groceries…everyone has their own preference.
while the value of the points might be higher for business…might not be for everyone. Some people would rather do 3 trips in economy rewards rather than 1 business…

    • Only makes sense if you are the 1% (platinum minimum).

Try and book a J330 RTW booking as a regular pleb in business.. . Not going to happen. Will end up flying some sectors in economy, but paying for business…at best. If you can't request seats, then you need to be a flight Tetris master, with the luck of winning lotto twice. Not worth the hassle

I think the best value (as a pleb) is bookings during peak events. $1000 each way in eco, or 5700pts +$42. If business is there, and it's an arvo where I can enjoy a lounge (drinks and food), I'll take it. Doubles your baggage allowance, Express entry. Triple the points, but quadruple less stress. It's like a meal and drinks gift card added in. The actual flight…meh.

Taking the first business flight in the morning (domestic) is a total waste. Many points offers are this flight.

I also don't like people saying points redemption flights are free. They are often far from it. For example, flying to NZ, taxes are around $200 each way on top of 25k ish points. You can often book a cash return for around $400. So that redemption is 50k points expensive.

  • Dang it. Just booked 2 weeks ago.

    • Me too. However I notice the flights I booked and anything within 2 weeks of it are no longer available, so it works out better that we were able to use points rather than not at all.

The T&C's on the website mention travel period as 1 November 2025 and 3 October 2026. The discount is applied based on the dates in the T&C's

  • +15

Given it's a criminal enterprise blatantly preventing competition from coming in to Australia
    + blatant bribery of politicians
+ blatant disregard for customer data:
have never flown with them, never will. No amount of discounting is enough.

Was eye opening in Europe to see how healthy competition really benefits the customer - something Cuntas actively blocks for Australians. Better protection on flight cancellations/delays…. even flew international in Europe for 12 Euros. We pay 30 times as much to fly out of state here.

    • +5

International in Europe for 12 Euros is a loss for the airline so not necessarily healthy competition. Time and time again, Australia has shown it can't support a 3rd airline. Ansett Australia, Rex, East-West Airlines, Tigerair, Bonza, Impulse, Hazelton, Kendell

I do agree that the Australian government does need to bring in some cancellation/delay compensation polices like those in the EU or US.

      • -4

We just need Fringe Benefits Tax to apply to Status credits and frequent flyer points for business travel - companies would ban their collection overnight. Competitors would then be able to enter and compete on price without dodgy benefits warping decisions.

Currently Virgin struggles against Qantas as business travelers, even those subject to cheapest-flight policies, engineer how they can fly Qantas to collect points and credits on the company-dime.

Government travelers aren't allowed to collect frequent flyer points on work trips, but they are allowed to collect status credits. Maybe this will be fixed but the bigger game is all the corporate travel.

        • +6

          Oh go away!

      • +2

Ryanair regularly sells flights for 10-20€ and made a profit of 1.5 Billion euros after tax, so they're not making losses.

      • +1

I do agree that the Australian government does need to bring in some cancellation/delay compensation polices like those in the EU or US - Nope Qantas group will be gone bankruptcy within a month for those fine, then government will use our tax money to save them again, it is a loop.

    • +3

Qantas is not worth supporting. Alan Joyce, then Data Leak and now mismanagement and greed blocking competition

  • +8

Probably just Qantas trying to compensate for their recent increases: https://www.pointhacks.com.au/news/qantas-new-reward-seat-ta…
Even looking at flights I've booked for April & July next year those are now unavailable as Classic Flights Rewards. Because Qantas.

  • Surely Virgin match this deal

  • +5

I see. It's only Classic Rewards Economy so no international. The flights I'm looking at to Singapore have increased from 23,000 to 29,000. Thanks Qantas!
Thanks too for the useless status credits to make up for leaking my personal details to the dark web.

  • +4

They’re doing this because of another recent data breach… yeah thanks but no thanks QF.

Good deal for people that… are travelling for domestic..

  • +1

    Good luck finding any availability

    • +4

Domestic economy for next year? Are you serious?

    • I agree! Can't be excited by anything Qantas these days.

  • Is classic plus also included?

    • +1

      Domestic only.

      • -2

Apologies I thought it meant as in flights from across Australia, not to Australian destinations or domestic flights. The title didn't allude nor the body.

    • You have no idea really.
This promo is for classic rewards, not classic plus or points plus pay and domestic flights only.

    • -1

Points amount don’t change.. it depends on the distance.. you are looking at classic plus.
What you are talking about has nothing to do with this deal.

    • You have no really idea

  • +4

    Now payback the taxpayer

    Kthnxbi

    • +1

Hmm unfortunately not, how about we delay your travel in the future and guarantee lost your bags?

      • Fair compromise, sign me up.

  • +2

So back to where the prices were before. Looks like the taxes have increased too. I'm still up voting because this is actually a deal. The Qantas points redemption is cheaper than the Jetstar!

    • +1

Yep, pretty much back to where they were pre-devaluation.

I've been increasingly looking at overseas rewards schemes and they're far better value/point. We're getting shafted in Australia.

      • +2

Massive shafting…but supply and demand with a duopoly.

Look om seats.aero for flight availability and taxes. We get shafted big time both ways.

I'm spewing I missed the Amex transfer to Alaskan. They have a zillion available seats at very little taxes. Hoping they will shake things up when they are fully online. Cathay might have some impact as well.

    • Sneaking up the taxes (which devalues the points)…while offering a promo ..CEO big bucks move.

  • +2

lol data breach! fk qantas and their overpaid ceo

  • When does it finish?
