Have had a gesture for a couple of years and they are a quality seat. Price has jumped significantly since then though.

  • Can anyone recommend a good headrest for the leap? they dont seem to sell them individually.

I've got an Atlas for my HM Embody - it's quality, feels like it was made by HM directly, though if I'm honest I sometimes wonder whether it's better to have a headrest, or to focus on posture/strengthening through back/core/shoulders/neck instead. If you're sitting (like me) even with a headrest it doesn't really fix any issues I have/or have had. It's good to sit back/chill for a moment (or in meetings when youre not so involved/youtube etc).

I only work/game at my Desk, though. I know some others watch movies/tv series etc so the headrest can definitely help more in those situations.

I tried these in person at their Sydney showroom (via appt) before I bought my HM Embody (tried at Living Edge).

I just couldn't quite get comfy. The padding on the seat also seemed like it needed… more? Or maybe more flex? I have a bony butt, those of you with more padding on your humps may be fine. I've never had an issue in my embody tailbone/butt wise! I've had knee/leg issues but that's probably more a me thing, than the chair thing. Every other office chair I've used/tried eventually I end up with tailbone pain.

Highly suggest you try before you buy when it comes to expensive chairs like these.. You won't really get a true sense until you're a couple hours into sitting on them, but you can at least get an idea whether they're immediately uncomfortable, or the dimensions are no good for your body size/type (or whether there's enough adjust-ability to combat this)

    • According to a Steelcase rep, the cushioning on their chairs are meant to be firm to discourage you from sitting for extended periods of time.

"we made the chair uncomfortable on purpose, so you don't sit on it too long" lol

        • The chair is extremely comfortable, and the foam has a 12 year warranty. It's also rated for 8+ hours of sitting per day, but there is no reason why anyone should sit for 8+ hours without getting up. The firmness simply encourages you to get up more often than not. It's a fantastic chair and I find it more comfortable in the long run than my work chair which has a very thick cushion.

          • @anarky: I should be able to sit comfortably for 2-3 hours straight, however, and whilst yes I agree we should move more than that, sometimes we just don't! And to suggest 'it's on purpose' sounds like a silly design idea and/or a cost cutting measure justified by 'just move more 4head'.

On the flipside, chairs also shouldn't be too plush! But eh chairs are too subjective to really make it about who's right/wrong. A gesture/leap may be perfect for one, and not for another. My Embody still isn't perfect for me, but a lot of that is related to my posture/weak core etc, which I'm fully aware of. But the seat comfort itself has never been an issue, the weight spreading design really helps with the pressure points.

            • @ReaperX22: I completely agree with you that seat cushioning is subjective. The firmness of the Gesture is a commonly divisive factor for many people and will obviously depend on a range of factors. I don't find it too hard or uncomfortable, but just right. I think the lumbar support for the Embody is almost as divisive for some people as the Gesture's seat cushion. I've tried a few sub $500 office chairs and have always had significant back pain until I bought the Gesture. Best 'office' purchase I have ever made :)

              • @anarky: Yeah lumbar is a pretty 'eh' thing for me on the Embody as although the adjustment is decent back and forth, there's no real up/down for it which, for someone like me with short limbs and a long torso (comparably) and known back problems, isn't the best. That's where my bad posture comes in and I don't worry about it! HAHA.

Melissa Promesh High Back from valueofficefurniture was a budget chair I bought for a separate room, and it was decent, but that thick cushion didn't help with lower back/butt pressure points. My partner, however, finds it quite comfortable and fits her perfectly! So just gave her that chair instead.

The only other chair I've used for extended periods that never hurt me/had pressure points was a Miro office chair (~500-600 range) from our previous office. When the office got emptied, the chairs never came with us, and I was kinda mad they didn't offer people to buy some! Lol. I would have! Massive company takes over small-medium startup = so much waste. I crievrytiem

True, chair comfort is highly subjective. I bought a Gesture with the intention of replacing my Aeron. I used it at home for a week but couldn't get comfy either. My butt would get really sore, the same feeling I get on a long-haul economy flight. I returned it after a week and went back to my 27-year-old Aeron which is far more comfortable for my butt.

On the other hand, one of my friends has a Gesture and loves it.

  • I've got the leap a few years ago. I don't think it is worth this much money. I got it on sale and my company paid for half of it. I still don't think it is worth this much money. The arms don't lock sideways. The adjustable lower back support could be wider and more comfortable.

I wish the back support wouldn't limit my arms movement. I think this is an issue with most chairs, not particular to this one.

  • I got a Leap V2 to replace an awful SecretLabs. Pretty comfy. Gf liked it so got one as well. They often go for 30% off though.

Mine developed a groan when reclining. Put in a support ticket, support really responsive, I'd usually have a reply in 10mins. Very thourough, lots of photos and videos shared. After a week I was told they'd send a replacement but would not collect the faulty one, so I kept it and just use it in my wfh office.

  • Anywhere we can still try it in Melbourne? Very keen on the leap but hesitant to pull the trigger.
