These are great if you have wide feet. They are heavy and do get a bit hot in my experience. They last well, and have good grip for trails with the Vibram tread, but look smart enough to wear around generally.

My preferred shoe for travel, but not if they are going in luggage.

  • +1

I really cant recommend these shoes, I have a pair I bought for traveling, I slipped and smashed my knee twice on the same holiday. They are incredibly slippery when there is any sort of water on the ground. Google these shoes, there are plenty of people with the same issue.

They are hiking shoes. Did you use them for hiking or for walking around city streets?

      • -2

They are shoes, I expect them to not break my neck regardless of where I am walking.

"A premium VIBRAM® rubber outsole which provides exceptional traction, slip resistant enough to grip the most challenging of surfaces, wet or dry."

Apparently a damp street is too much of a challenging surface.

        • +3

Hiking shoes have an aggressive tread and are designed for trails, rocks, gravel, mud… uneven surfaces. An aggressive tread does not have much traction on wet pavement. This is a characteristic common to all hiking shoes.

If you examine, for example, running shoes designed for pavement, you will notice that they have a lot of flat contact area.

@sponson: Look mate, I have worn boots for 30 years. Ive never had a pair that are like iceskates when the ground is wet. You can pretend its normal but its not.

            • +2

@LordDragon: there's a reason there are dirt bike tyres that aren't road legal. They are designed for a certain type of surface and don't perform as well as street tyres on the street.

I wonder what type of surfaces hiking shoes are designed for?

              • -1

@Bacons: Buy them then, IDGAF, hope there is no rocks when you go for a hike.

                • @LordDragon: yeah mate, hopefully I'll slip and smash my knee twice on the same hike haha

                • @LordDragon: These people are making pit stops for shoe changes every time the road condition and weather changes.

      • +2

you don't go hiking, do you? It's more dangerous to slip while you hike than taking a walkabout city streets.

    • +3

I have the Moab 2 and they seemed fine for the icy streets of New York when I was there. YMMV

Of course size 15 is full price

    • +1

      that's clown size!

Why would you get GTX shoes when RTX has been out for years?

  • I've had these for a few years now and love them.
Originally purchased them for a euro winter trip and worn daily and still get weekly use back home.
    Super comfortable.

  • +1

    doesn't show 79.9 for me.

    • many sizes did before - now they do not.. it means they sold out of however many they were offering at that price.

  • good price

  • +2

Merrell's ain't what they used to be, even at $70, not worth it.

    • Who still is? I've been a Keens wearer for many years but they are cheapening out too.

  • Perfect timing my current waterproof Merrell's just died after years of kid's soccer watching!

  • Why is it showing 199 for me..hwo to get discount?

    • they've sold out in that size if it's not this price

  • Why hiking shoes are so popular? Because they are low in quantity maybe.

  • I found they shrunk when washed…

    • Hiking shoes don't belong in the washing machine.
In fact no shoes do except for a few sneaker models that explicitly state they can be washed that way.

  • Merrell is terrible, i sacked em 10 years ago after a purchase of 2 pairs of shoes on special, one of them fell apart on me in HK walking down a hill.
