Ubiquiti Unifi Switch Lite 8 Port PoE $198 (Was $259) + Delivery ($0 to Metro with $250 Order/ NSW C&C/ mVIP) @ Mwave

80

This switch is on runout as the newer Ultra models hit the market. The problem is newer models are more expensive. The base model does not even come with a power supply for a PoE switch!?! The equivalent newer model with a 60W power supply is $280!

Model: USW-LITE-8-POE

Comes with a 60W power supply of which 52W are available for PoE. My installation is telling me the connected PoE+ U6-Pro Wifi AP is using just 8.7W. At this price it is a bargain and well worth it for a managed switch where the free management toolset can be run on PC or dedicated hardware like the excellent UCG Ultra.

Comes with wall mounting plate and bracket. Great switch, strongly recommend this gear because of the superb management toolset.

Surcharges: 0% bank transfer, BPAY, Afterpay, 1% for credit/debit card & Zip.

  • nice price compared to Cisco, but I'm curious what are the benefits for a hobbyist getting a managed switch?

Compared to a OpenWRT/opnsense router, with a dumb switch hanging off for each subnet. (OK, only have 2, PC and IoT, networking newbie.)

    • Have you had a look at the management interface? Ping me direct and happy to show you.

      • No, I'm happy with my setup, just curious. All I wanted was to isolate untrusted IoT devices from my LAN. Wondering what else peopel do in the hobbiest space. I assume you are not running a corporate WAN. A lot easier to manage than OpenWRT?

The primary reason as you say, is to segment the network. Isolated guest networks, isolated IoT networks, and so on. Depending on how technical you are, it might go a lot further with DMZ, S2S links, etc.

        • +1

          Several reasons
Segment off devices you don't trust
Run multiple WiFi networks, Every SSID needs a separate Vlan.
I trunk cameras back to the camera side of my NVR.

Now you might be able to do that in your router but you're limited with what you can do as each unmanaged switch must be on one Vlan.

The other reason to get a managed switch is to see errors, you have no way to see if an unmanaged switch is dropping packets. Also for collecting network stats via snmp.

    • A hobbyist who has no other need for managed networking? Probably none.

This isn't just a managed AP - those PoE ports can power cameras, access points, etc.

This would be good for someone who wants to start building out at home/small office network. Combine it with a Unifi controller, some Unifi APs, and possibly a camera or video doorbell and you've got a high quality network.

I have a mix of Mikrotik switches and Unifi switches - I have one of these in the garage to power a camera and outdoor access point for IoT things that are unable to reach the APs inside.

  • So given this is L2 managed, it should be able to switch on off power to individual poe ports via the Web admin right? I wonder if home assistant could also control that.

    • +1

Yes, you can power cycle individual ports via the Unifi controller.

Yes, the Home Assistant integration has an option to power cycle Unifi PoE switch ports. You do need the Unifi controller for this though.

e You can also enable/disable ports, and enable/disable PoE, too - I just checked

      • Thanks for clarifying, appreciate it. I run HA on my synology via docker and looks like I can run the unifi controller in a docker container as well so looks like it all should do the trick.

        • Yeah, you can run the controller in Docker - I'm doing that, but Ive moved all my containers off to dedicated hosts.

A friend was running it on the Synology but it required a bit more hand-holding and fiddling to associate it with the right NIC port, but if you're comfortable with that - should be all fine. The most problem-free experience will be with their hardware.

Only 4 ports have POE (just so no one is misled).

Staticice says available for $199 at Computer Alliance, CPL, umart and Landmark. https://staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=UniFi+Lite+8+P…

Showing $249 for me when I click the link.

App shows $198 when I search, but then goes $249 when clicking into it.

    • Yeah it's expired

  • Does this model allow for full vlan management (Cant remember correct terminology)? I have the lite/flex one and it doesn’t let you configure vlans fully.

    • +2

It does providing you're running an instance of the unifi controller.

  • what are the "newer ultra switches"?
