Ovo EV Plan Removes Daytime Free Tariff

Bad news for anyone with a battery who enjoyed the benefits of this plan over summer/winter. Looks like they've dropped the benefit for new customers.

    This is bad news.

Even without a home battery, I schedule appliances to take advantage of the 3 hours free electricity every day — dishwasher, washing machine, dehumidifier, A/C, EV charger.

I suppose I can shift some of this load to the 6c/kw nighttime period, but it's not so convenient.

AGL and PowerShop have plans with 2 hours free usage, but I have 100+ referrals for Ovo so I'm not going to switch until all my credit has been used up.

    • +1 for being the best ozbargainer to ever bargain.

  • I wonder why they'd do this considering wholesale power prices are still largely negative during those hours, hence they are actually making money by people sucking down power during that time, even when they give it away.

    • My guess is that battery users would be able to time shift all their usage into either 'free' or 8c per kWh, so they make no margin on those customers, hence the removal.

Better to install a stack more solar now.

      • Yeah I guess that makes sense.

Definitely for spring. Rarely negative during winter and a warm summer.

The whole wholesale negative price isn't really that common is it? I've seen old graphs of midday prices and its only sometimes negative, you can't build a business model off occasional events.

It's negative basically every day unless it's particularly rainy day.

  • Looks like just for new customers so those who are already on it will get to keep it… even if only for a bit longer.

globird energy also has 3hrs free daily grid charging

    • This is a different product.

The old OVO EV plan is 8c per kWh between midnight and 6am AND 0c per kWh between 11am and 2pm

Ovo free 3 and the globird plan you linked both offer 3 free hours in the middle of the day. As someone mentioned, powershop offers 2 hours.

it's not about the free 3 hours but about whether you can have your cake and eat it too, there won't be short of retailers offering free midday electricity but cheap overnight rate gonna be things of the past when more people plug in their EV overnight and coal station being shutdown here and there.

  • It's crap. I still have it, although I suspect they'll eventually change this for grandfathered plans. Was good to set the home battery to recharge to 100% by 14:00, for the free power during peak hours. I also set my weekend chores like washing/drying and EV charging in the 3 hour window.

time to switch every 3 months or so with some new cashback or giftcard offer. Simple but a bit of headache. I found engie to be the cheapest for me in metro SA.
