So you haven’t purchased this olive oil since 2019 pre Covid?

      • -2

        I just haven’t used it

Looks like ALDI lowered their one

    THE OLIVE TREE
Mediterranean Extra Virgin Olive Oil 3.78L $38.99
    3,780 ml ($1.03 per 100 ml)

This should be the normal price now since olive oil prices have dropped considerably. How do Coles get away with these fake 'specials' every few weeks now rather than actually just dropping the price?

    • +6

Ikr, I'm stuck between WW and Coles and it feels like I'm buying goods when they are half price but now I'm no longer sure if even these half price deals are genuine enough or its better heading off to ALDI for every grocery regardless of their offers?

      • I've worked out that Colesworth have a half price sale on an item and a week later the non-sale regular price has gone up slightly (from where it was before the half price sale).

      • You buy what they offer. Targeted.

    • +3

We know that prices never go back down, eggs, olive oil, butter, these are the new lows they only go up from here.
Australia has an inflated prices problem, if you buy anything not on half price weekly special or 20%+ off you're getting ripped off.

      • +3

        Correct

That’s why inflation is worse than a recession

        • -3

It's really great in melbourne not only do we get ripped off but we have to worry about getting stabbed/hacked to death and our cars stolen too :D I'm sure digital ID and treaty will fix all of this

          • @Becoming Uncanny: It's time to touch grass.

            • -1

@andyfc: Ahh yes time to touch grass my mate with two young kids got his car stolen at knife point a month ago in his own home.

      • +4

We're potentially getting ripped off at the lower price too though.

That's what this high - low pricing scam is about. We think we should rush out and get the bargain, but what they're really doing is doubling the price and then telling us it's come down to half that.

        • +1

Yeah it combines "making something seems higher value than it really is" and "get it before the price goes back up"

    • Jake first, discount later, it's the aussie way, then it meets ozb posting requirements. You can't post everyday low since it's now a deal/discount.

For this reason, gov tries to invite another new big shop to Australia (I can't remember the name).

  • Harris Farm has EV Olive oil italian olive oil for $70. Bastards..

    just a heads up.
I tried this, completely tasteless, light yellow/transparent color and not thick.
I highly doubt it's "100% Spanish Extra Virgin Olive Oil"
But I tried most (if not all) of the olive oil brands in woolies/coles (including local australian ones), most of them taste nothing like olive oil :)

    • So which one then?

      • when I can I get imported middle eastern olive oil. However, they're more expensive and hard to find. I live in sydney cbd and couldn't find any here.
I ordered 17L few months ago from a middle eastern shop. That was good but the website is dead now. I'll probably post on reddit to check where I can find some good ones, I add olive oil to almost everything. Once you have middle eastern olive oil you can't go back to this shit haha

    • Maybe they use tasteless olives to make the oil?

    • I bought a Moro mild olive oil tin at Woolworths (they were sold out of extra virgin), I hope it's pure olive oil.

  • +2

If you’re going buy Spanish olive oil, purchase it from Aldi who didn’t screw people over the shortage period.

A true 1/2 price special for this under current global pricing would be ~$30.

  • +2

Buy Australian olive oil. Shorter transit, better quality and not likely to have been adulterated by lower grade olive oil or chemicals.

    • Surprised people can fake olive oil and surprised it's in/from EU and not from China.

    • +1

Maybe a unpopular opinion but I avoid Aussie oil because we use as much pesticides as the USA which I also avoid. EU has much better regulations on agriculture and food.

  • +6

The trouble with olive oils from Europe is that they are often adulterated or diluted with inferior oils, it’s rampant over there.

If you want a true first pressing Extra Virgin Olive Oil try the Aldi Australian Olive oil in the three litre tin. You can tell it’s legit, not completely clear, nice smell. My go to oil now.

Love all the olive oil facts in this thread.
