I've bought a few refurbished in the past. These are strung up outdoors so I don't need them to be mint. I had a problem which was my own network issue and Reolink gave me no problems initiating the return including creating a shipping label that I subsequently cancelled.

Good value compared to what I've paid for the Duo in the past ie. up to ~$250. Of course I'm expecting people will say 8K is better etc. and that it's worth paying more for the Duo 3. These do the job for me for now especially for the price.

Duo 2 PoE https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/396186640674 $119.99
Doorbell https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/394903237995 $112

No apologies for recommending the Duo2 over later 16mp models.

It's an exceptional performer with a better field of view than the later Duo3. What you forgo in resolution, you make up for with much broader FOV coverage. Given most people use these 180 degree cameras for oversight, supplemented by other cameras for closer ID, they're a great choice at a great price.

Will be interesting to hear if many people report receiving new or used cams. Many posters in the past have said their "refurb" cameras from Reolink were only box damaged and As New for all intents and purposes. @s3n - what condition did you receive your previous refurbs in?

Also, the CX810 is a great cam as well, notably for anyone requiring better nighttime vision. Shame they don't have any deals on the new turret form factor CX820 yet…

    • So you reckon the CX810 is a good all rounder and night recording?

      • +3

I have bought a couple. One is monitoring a few side and rear doors and it lights them up all night in pitch black with clear colour vision. The other is monitoring a side pathway and it's also bright colour all night. The Duo's I use for large garden areas where I need wide and distance vision but they go into night vision black and white at night so they aren't as nice as the ColorX. The 50% white led spot light feature it has seems to be a bit of a hit and miss but the 50% IR lights do their job of black and white vision.

Impressed with the CX810 bought one more and another Duo for another garden area.

        • Could you tell whether it was new or pre-loved?

          • +1

@UncleRico: It came in a cardboard box the same shape as the new box that I got from the aliexpress deal. The inclusions were all the same as new and installed like new. The camera may have been installed before or attempted install and returned not sure but all works the same.

I paid $102.59 the last time so happy to save again on that

          • +2

@UncleRico: Reolink Refurb. are at worst 30 days old (30-day moneyback guarantee), but of the…8-10 I've purchased I wouldn't be abke to distinguish them from brand new if it weren't for the standard brown box packaging.

Personally, the best thing about the refurbished range is the availability of a variety of cameras in black.

            There's a bunch of models available too, not just the 3 listed in the OP. It's by far the largest range I've ever seen available. Some of the range;

            • 843A
            • Trackmix PoE
            • 823A
            • 1224A
            • 1212A
            • Duo Floodlight
            • Bunch different Argus
            • E1 range (v1)
              And plenty more…
      • Absolutely.

As others will tell you, Reolink are great bang for buck but are not the world's best for low light footage. The CX810 struggles with motion ghosting in ultra-low light conditions, but you need very little ambient light for that to be a non-issue. if you've got any street light spill within 100 yards or any porch or solar garden lights in the vicinity, it's outstanding. Worst case, having any other camera in the area (Duo for wide-angle, Trackmix for PTZ motion tracking or literally any other camera with LEDs) to supplement with some ambient light will get exceptional results.

Caveat - the 4mp CX410 was better in ultra-low light, albeit with half the pixel count. And the turret CX820 performs identically with a form factor that many consider superior - notably for mounting horizontally under eaves and soffits rather. But for the modest price increase over their 810A or 820A, any of the CX series are a worthwhile upgrade and provide great all-round performance, and vastly superior to most of the Reolink range if night-time recording is important to you.

Of course I'm expecting people will say 8K is better etc. and that it's worth paying more for the Duo 3.

I have both the Duo 2 (with PoE powered floodlights) and Duo 3.
Whilst the 16MP / 8K footage is superb during daytime, at night time Duo 2 image quality is much better (with floodlights off for comparison purposes).
Also, the FoV on the Duo 3 is much worse than Duo 2. I don't know Reolink was smoking at the time they came up with Duo 3. They have taken 1 step forward and 2 steps backwards. It would be more tolerable if the image sensor was upgraded to 1/1.8" on the Duo 3.

  • These are excellent cameras. Especially at night. Their rtsp stream works well if you use 3rd party nvr system

  • Duo 2 is a good camera, have 3 of them.
I bought 2 of them (new) for $147 each a couple of weeks ago but refurbs for $120 also sounds like a deal to me.
The 180 degrees of coverage is very good for covering wide areas with just one camera.

  • +1

Are the refurbs always unused ? Can’t find a lot of info about their true condition.

    • Almost always, but not guaranteed. Read the FAQ on reolink.com from menu (mobile browse) Deals > Refurbished and you'll get the full rubdown.

As I mentioned above, one never received one which was in any manner distinguishable from new besides from the box they all come in. At most they're 30 days old.

  • Do i need nvr for cx810 or duo 2?

    Any recommendations for poe switch?

    • No you don't need a Reolink NVR, although enhanced functionality is possible thru it. Any other brand NVR, a NAS running Frigate or something similar or Reolink's HomeHub are all used by many.

Keeplink 8+2 POE switch can be had from AliExpress for under $40.

      • this poe should works right? https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0CHFFKF4F?th=1

        • Absolutely. I have and use both this 5 port, as well as it's 8 port equivalent and both are working fine.

Just beware that it's got a relatively low power budget of 65w - and the 8 port has an even lower 62w. That should be fine for most cams, but if you're using multiple cams with floodlights or high power draws, it's possible you could exceed it. By comparison, the Keeplink has a power budget of over 120w.

          • @UncleRico: cool just bought cx810. now going to look for a poe switch

            • @ShadowSaver: If you don't see yourself needing more than 4 or 5 ports in the near future, the one you linked is fine.

              • @UncleRico: I think I will end up with at least 4 cameras and maybe some spares for other poe devices. so I am looking at keeplink now

Any suggestions for a detection notification if I block camera access to the internet?

                • @ShadowSaver: Make sure you put your cameras on a different VLAN to your home network using a managed switch then manage the port forwarding and traffic rules individually. You don’t want to be able to plug into your LAN from outdoors. If you block internet access the app should still work from within your LAN but not outside unless you forward.

I’m thinking of installing frigate one day to manage it all properly since it’s not great to have ports open to the internet even if on a different VLAN but I just haven’t got around to it yet so I’m relying on VLANS and IPS to save me.

                • @ShadowSaver: I went down that path of blocking internet access, but ended up allowing access again.

The convenience of getting a doorbell ring or movement notification from the other cameras on my phone was too good to give up. But I record locally, no cloud storage.

                  • @fullerms: Me too

The new firmware for the doorbell allows a video call from your phone

That’s awesome for a ~$100 door bell on sale (which is part of this sale by the way) where else can you get that?

                    • @s3n: I need to install the new firmware to test it out.

Agreed on the value proposition of the brand. I initially installed a Ring Doorbell, and I found out that the doorbell will not work out if we lose internet connectivity. Had an NBN outage for a couple of days due to a fibre cut somewhere and no doorbell!!!!

This was close to two years ago and I'm not sure if they fixed it with a firmware update. But it's a major design snafu by Amazon.

Returned it immediately and bought the Reolink PoE doorbell. Started expanding the eco system after I saw the value in the brand.

                  • +1

@fullerms: I think if you have a NAS in the Cam LAN then only allow NAS access to the internet for notification may be possible. And then VPN from mobile back to home to view the footage.Am not sure yet need to have a play.

                    • @ShadowSaver: VPN back to your lan from mobile will always work anyway if internet blocked since it’s like being within your network but i’ve tried it and it dropped out and reconnected all the time was annoying as hell plus drained my battery life so I gave up

          https://amzn.asia/d/5bI4u5u

I got one of these a year ago. it's got 10 ports, 8 of which are POE and a 123W POE budget.

Powers two Duos with spotlights, one door bell and two turret cameras (forgot the model).

          • @fullerms: Nice one there’s also a keeplink managed. I’m all on Unifi which is crazy expensive but has saved me a lot of time overall and been rock solid.

          • @fullerms: Does that switch support VLAN tagging on a per-port basis?

      • Do we need cabler installer to lay out the cable or we can DIY? Tried to search around for a licensed installer apparently it's gonna be more expensive than the camera itself per camera installation.

        • +1

Anyone can do it, but officially you need a cabler. Running POE cake itself is relatively risk free, but the potential to electrocute yourself on mains power you crossover or put your foot through the ceiling whilst navigating roof cavities is real. How handy are you and what’s your risk appetite?

      • Hey UncleRico, was reading through the keeplink 8+2 POE Switch and it mentions that Function
POE,VLAN Support. What features are included in VLAN support?

        • Sorry mate, no idea.

          I’m a networking amateur…

  • +1

    Thanks OP

  • I would love to get the Duo 2, but I have already used all POE ports on my 8 Camara NVR. Is there any way to add more?

    • +1

      Yep.

The NVR8 has a number of "bonus" channels.

Chiefly, via the documented four secondary channels which can only be used for the second feed of any dual lens cams such as the Trackmix or Duo range, or any battery/solar cams which do not record constantly so use minimal resources.

The undocumented bonus is that many people have had success adding an extra wifi feed alongside their 8 POE/wifi inputs. In your case, you'd need to add a WiFi Duo to make this work.

Reolink has never confirmed this feature, but plenty of people on Reddit and other forums have reported it. Caveat is that at least one of your connected feeds needs to be wifi, since the NVR only has 8 x RJ45 ports. Whilst it is possible that this feature may not work if you're consuming too many system resources or bandwidth (8 x 16mp cams?, older firmware NVR?, slower hard drive?), I'm yet to hear of anyone who has tried it without success. The most common usage of this is people using 8 x POE cams plus 1 x wifi doorbell, chiefly since it's easier to cable and connect doorbells to architraves or doorjams using existing (non-POE) power cabling, but ostensibly it should work for any additional wi-fi feed. And before anyone gets greedy, it only works on one additional wi-fi input. No-one has ever reported any success attempting to add a further wifi channel.

      • Thanks for this info Uncle Rico. But in short, I can only potentially add 4 more 1 more wifi camera, not any more POE?

        • Correct. You cannot exceed the 8 POE cam limit, even through usage of switches or splitters.

Best case scenario would be 8 POE or wifi + 1 wifi + 4 battery.

    • Just upgrade your NVR to RLN16 for $580 including 4TB HDD. Possibly get 10% off that as well with a current promo.

  • Top find! I use Reolink Renewed every chance I get. They're full warranty and guaranteed unused, why wouldn't you?!

  • +4

Good deal for the Duo 2 and seems like it was jumped on, all sold out now.

I'm a builder and regularly installing Dahua/Hikvision systems through my security contractors but I find Reolink is good bang for buck and has good software thats easy for the layman to navigate and operate.

My fellow autists on ipcamtalk only really rate the Reolink doorbell cam but I think they're wrong to be honest, especially when compared to the mostly poor Dahua models that get peddled in Australia. Of course if you're ordering from Empiretech and getting the models with the best sensors then its different but how many layman can be bothered to do that?

I have a mate who couldn't afford a proper security system at the end of his build and then got me to install some Reolinks for him and the police have used footage 3 times in the past year and have actually caught the people thanks to the footage.

I also set up some Reolinks at my own house and I am satisfied with them, I think the CX820, Duo2 and Doorbell are awesome bang for buck and I know of nothing else comparable for the price. I have some RLC-1224a's as well but I don't really rate them however I don't think they are terrible either, just lacking at night like many Reolink and even other manufacturers offerings.

I've ordered various Empiretech cams for one of my current builds and my electrician and I are going to do in depth testing to compare them to the local Dahua models and also the Reolinks.

    • +1

would be good to get your feedback, I'm nearing build completion and contemplating on which system to invest in. have only used Reolink on build site to do a Timelapse and that has worked great. got a quote from installers, they recommend Dahua all the way.

    • but I find Reolink is good bang for buck and has good software thats easy for the layman to navigate and operate.

Couldn't agree more. Whilst Dahua and/or Hikvision are great, they are costly and for most people Reolink does just as good of a job.

Got one of the CX810’s, more out of curiosity than genuine need.

If they are a genuine refurb, rather than a retail unit dressed up as mutton to circumvent retail pricing constraints, they’ve done a grand job on them. Not a single sign of wear, identical packaging but for the brown box instead of the blue retail, serial number has a different prefix which prevents from tracking whether it’s newer or older than retail units purchase over past year or two, albeit the sticker with the QR code has one extra line, “Product Condition: Refurbished”. Haven’t commissioned it, so I can’t verify firmware but it seems very plausible that they’re essentially brand new. Still more expensive than the US$50-55 I usually paid on AliExpress, but it seems like that ship may have sailed so this is next best pricing.

    Thanks OP!

    • What benefit is it for Reolink to label actual new ones as refurb? Get some better tax treatment or eBay fee lower ?

      • +1

Refurbs could have been new products used for display or demo or training. They could be bulk commercial orders not in retail box that were cancelled and packaged brown box for disposal. Much the same happens with Dell refurbished As new ie. returns. Often people buy quite a few ie. 10 and find they can’t fit or the single one they did try out didn’t meet their expectations or wasn’t compatible with their setup.

I got a duo today with plastic over the lens cover looks quite new.

I didn’t know that according to parad0x’s comment above they aren’t old at all.

      • As with winemakers who sell through cleanskin sellers, their is a value attached to their brand which some merchants don’t want diluted for fear of compromising the value perception and perceived worth of their product.

I don’t know if that’s at play here or if Reolink just do a solid job of restoring used units to mint condition. Either way, if they hold up, refurbs could be the panacea to losing the value segment of their market who came aboard if the back of OzBargain and AliExpress bargains.
