Don't buy switch 2 for Z-A only. The game is trash and fans deserve better

    • +14

i still find it crazy the lack of voice acting in first party nintendo games

i would almost settle for ai voice in their games

      • +1

Must hate Zelda games since link can't speak

        • +13

At least Zelda games animate emotions in their cut scenes.

In the Pokemon games they just stand there with mouth moving.

          • @Circly: Fair enough.
I guess there are differences even on the no dialogue space.
            As responded to vanyellow below,
One of my fav games Astro Bot has no dialogue but find that game practically perfect. It's just not a deal breaker for me.

3D Zelda games i dont get in to

yet i enjoy the 2D Zelda's had good fun playing "echoes of wisdom" (was also suitable for my young kids to watch me play…)

now that i think about it my daughter did all the voice acting for me!, she read out all the lines of the game for my other kids

          • @vanyellow: Hahaha that's awesome.
It's always awesome playing with kids. Daughter is similar with astrobot.. who also doesn't speak lol
That also happens to be one of our fav games despite no dialogue.
For me despite dialogue being helpful it's not a deal breaker.

          Hup! Hyeeet! Hraaarh! Yarrrrrhh!

      • +6

Yes 100% agree, makes me not want to play their games. Its pure laziness from the developers.

      • +1

Voice acting is the least of their issues.

I prefer zero voice acting over bad voice acting. The voice acting in Zelda was terrible. It made the game far worse for me.

        • Lost souls aside is a great example of bad voice acting. Would have preferred that game to be a silent game.

      • +1

I still like to imagine what everybody sounds like… just like the good old days of gameboy

      • +3

Pokemon need to branch out from Game Freak

    • really? that bad? i have it ready but havent got time to play

      • +4

        no lol

Tutorial is the worst part, work past that and it's quite fun

      • I agree with @Guyandson - the Tutorial is a killer! I normally bore of Pokemon games within the first hour (the kids normally last 2-3), but my eldest and I are quite enjoying this one. Love the battle system and catching system. I just need my shiny Pumpkaboo and I'll be happy.

    • +11

I really expected pokemon to be at final fantasy levels by now, instead it's still the same quality that I expect from 3ds games.

      • +2

Pokemon X and Y on 3DS were the last good Pokemon games.

    • -1

since when does a camera shop sell videos games?

    • +3

It is cheap of Gamefreak to keep doing this, and they should put more budget in, but the core gameplay loop is a lot of fun, which is what really matters.

    • -1

Graphics are shit and the idea to have the game in one city is terrible. But like legends arceus, after a few hours the gameplay starts to grow on you. The first few hours before you can mega evolve and explore the entire city are a bit rough tho

      • +3

Having game in 1 city isn't bad. It depends on the execution and things to do. No body complained about GTA games being set in the 1 city, or even Yakuza games which is set in a single district.

      • +1

I love the idea of one city, think the graphics are fine, i just think the city itself could have more life and scope to it. I normally complain about maps being too big, but this one is too small. They could make the city huge and sprawling and it'd be great.

    • -1

The only people trashing the game are people who haven't played it

      It's genuinely really fun

  • +13

Just to offer a different opinion here:

I am having a ton of fun in Z-A. After getting through the grind of a tutorial, it's the most fun I've had in the modern (non 2D) Pokemon games.

The new PvP/battle system is top notch too.

      • +11

You do also get a console..

        • -5

Haha for sure! But to play the game, I'd have to buy the console to play it. Is it worth getting the switch 2, or buy even just a second hand Switch 1 just to play the game?

          • @onlinepred: You are in a small minority of potential purchasers that doesn't own either switch. There is pretty much no game i would buy a whole console for. For me the Switch 2 is worth it in the same way the PS5 is, it has new games, and plays all the old ones better than the prior console, whilst being generally more snappy and responsive.

            • @witheredcouch: Fair, I bought an XBOX S a while back for gamepass, and after playing a few games I sold it and had decent resale. I thought most old switch 1 games were not rewritten to play better, and only some ran slightly better?
Either way, I enjoy pokemon games, have a PS5 and a PC, so can't play the latest pokemon games.

              • @onlinepred: Most are not patched, but a lot of games have dynamic resolutions or had inconsistent frame rates, meaning the switch 2 will play it at the highest bounds of its settings, even if no patch.

    • +4

Agreed. I'm 20+ hours in and I'm really enjoying myself. The battle system is great. Once I finish the main story I'll probably keep playing until I finish the Dex and side quests.

I'm running on the OG Switch and it's fine. Lots of loading screens. The beginning is a GRIND with how much they hold your hand and they remove some QOL changes from previous games that I'm confused about.

I feel this summarises most Pokemon games - looks janky, but a lot of fun.

      • -5

They haven't been fun since 2D and none of those looked janky.

        • +1

Maybe Pokemon just isn't for you anymore? The games are still as fun as ever, albeit with a bit too much handholding etc.

    • ive been enjoying it more than i expected. yeah it doesnt look fantastic but im having fun at least. i actually want to play more right now.

  • +11

Ever since Sun and Moon. I havn't been able to enjoy a Pokemon game. The excessive tutorials are just brutal. For a franchise that makes as much money as they do. They should be ashamed of the poor products they release. Its pathetic.

    • -4

They're like Apple. They just know fans will lap up whatever crap they shovel and put in the bare minimum effort each new iteration.

      • Not even that. The console games are symbolically the most important product of a Pokémon generation, but they’re financially the least important.
Merchandise, multimedia, mobile game MTX and other licensing ventures are often the ones that make the most money, or at least more than the games.

      • You are going to be very surprised at what Google and Samsung have been doing too

        • -3

Yeah but people don't act like it's the second coming of Jesus though.

          • +1

@Ruddaga: Oh they do haha, it's called basic marketing.

          • @Ruddaga: No one does for anything, you're just stuck in the past.

            • -1

@smartazz104: Look at all the sheeple coming out to defend their product while telling me the insane apple loyalty isn't still a thing. Oh the irony… It's not lost on me but I assume it's very lost on you mate.

Sun And Moon was a gen I just couldn't get into, same with Sword and Shield. However, despite the bugs and framerate issues, I found Scarlet and Violet to be a lot of fun.

ZA is an extremely smooth experience (at least on switch 2), and very bug free, it is just a bit limited in scope and Game Freak should do better. Despite that, I don't regret buying it as it is a lot of fun.

      • yeah, i didn't find any bugs or discomfort in playing experience on switch 1. So far, the game play seems a little repetitive to me getting the challenger's ticket then go off to fight an alphabet, besides the side quests.

        • It starts to change a fair bit a few letters into the Alphabet, but yeah, it is fairly formulaic, but so are most Pokemon games, it is just normally masked by exploring new towns.

    • +1

Sun and Moon is the first gen I didn't finish. Sword and Shield I probably put 3 hours into it, so I didn't bother with Scarlet and Violet. I think I just don't like Pokemon games anymore

      • I thought that too as that was my experience with those games as well, but then I really liked Scarlet and Violet.

  • Loving ZA so far. I actually dont mind having a small ermap as I feel like I can finally finish a pokemon game lol. Still havent finished shield and violet and I probably never will haha

  • pokémon fans deserve what they get

  • +1

the comments are either ZA is trash or ZA is fun. have played about 15 hours and I think it is a lot of fun. Everyone's idea of fun is very subjective though. I think it's an amazing game and love the new battle mechanics.

I can't believe they didn't create any of the voice acting, it's so easy with the help of AI these days

    • +1

I think almost all of us would take no voice acting over AI voice acting. I'm willing to keep buying these lazy games as long as they are fun, but if they started using AI voice acting that is where I would draw the line and vote with my wallet.

      • -2

        If I can’t tell it’s AI , then don’t care.

        • +1

If a company that essentially prints money wants voice acting, then they should pay for that voice acting from actual voice actors, rather than using an AI that is probably modeled on those voice actors' voices and essentially stealing work from them. I don't care if its indistinguishble, it's ethically messed up.

          • @witheredcouch: Nintendo and ethics?

            • @PainToad: I'm just saying where I as a consumer draw the line, not that Nintendo wouldn't do it.

              • @witheredcouch: Fair. But I think you're going to end up not buying anything if you want to boycott anything involving AI.

                • @PainToad: Unless something majorly changes about the way AI is done and what the models derive for their "inspiration", then I have no issue with voitng with my wallet on that. If they want to resort to morally and creatively bankrupt processes to make their products, i have no issue doing the same to experience them.
