but to a ultimate frisbee player… that plastic is everything.
it's the defacto brand and the "feel" of the disk is top tier. so $20 to most players is quite a deal.
no doubt but there's some serious margin for a piece of molded plastic no matter the R&D & sponsorship etc
Same principle with rubber basket/foot/soccer balls. Having used non-weighted cheap feeling frisbees, these feel bettter to throw. Like most things in life, once you try quality it's hard to go back. Our goal as OzBargainers is to find that quality for cheap!
@REEGZ: Yup, I've had cheap frisbees before, even weighted ones, and they often weren't very well balanced, lost their shape in the sun or over time, and even lacked a consistent shape from the start.
I also have a 175g Discraft like above that I have had for probably 13-14 years at this point and it is still in really good shape and you can get consistent performance out of it.
@BusMan247: I used it pretty heavily in the first few years. I don't play Ultimate Frisbee, it was just something to throw around when out in the field for uni or something to do on weekends while chilling in the park. Hasn't seen as much use lately because I work too much and kids are too young to play.
uh oh the powerful frolf lobby have spoken
turn it upside down, and you sir have a dinner plate…
$30 discounted to $20 for a piece of plastic hmmmm
Sigh, not this irrelevant reductionist argument again.
The raw materials costs for all the compounds that go into a human is around $200, so why even bother spending money to see a doctor?
you must be top of the list for dinner party invites
Isn't that what most people say to you?
After you say "why did you waste money on expensive wine, isn't it just grapes squeezed into a bottle?"
@rumblytangara: are you just going to continue with random examples, you'd probably argue with your own shadow
You were the one who was a party pooper in the first place.
that's a bit rich
Found this for $6.99 on Aliexpress, "Competition plastic" too
Specifically a Discraft Ultrastar?
We already have a disc so don't really need to buy one but these are really nice to throw. So much better than any generic ones. Might as well put in some camel alerts. Bit difficult with so many colour options.
Bought one. Summer with a kid sorted.
Checked the link, ended up buying a $16 14" aerobie pro instead 😅
Pretty sure the nephew will love it
I know its not just a frisbee and its built to a spec but the thought of a $20 frisbee on ozbargain is making me chuckle
Gold standard frisbee IMO. I bought 2 of these about 15 years ago when I got into chucking the fris with my mates back in the day (I've since lost one of them), now 15 years later the same frisbee comes with me in my sports bag if I ever want to throw it and it works as well as ever. To those complaining about the price for a plastic disc, if you've ever thrown a dud frisbee, you'll wish you spent the extra few dollars for a good one. Just my 2c
Edit: one should also consider the total $ cost to enter a sport in earnest. at $20 you pretty much have everything you need to play :) - compare this to cricket, tennis, equestrian, bmx, golf, hockey where you're into the hundreds of dollars just to see if you like it lol
One should always have a discraft in the back of their car. It's a car accessory more than anything else for when you wanna have an impromptu session with a couple mates.
That's what I thought the pockets on the rear of the front seats were there for… Doesn't everyone have a disc in theirs?
I skimmed read backwards and read this 'for when you wanna have an impromptu session with a couple mates.'
well, hello..
I ended up buying this set because it comes with 3 discs, for different ranges.
~$40

no idea how the brand compares quality wise though
The one you have linked is intended for golf, this is for throwing between humans or playing Ultimate Frisbee.
ahh my mistake!
Does disc golf or whatever it's called even exist in Australia? I thought it was a North American thing (and very niche at that).
not huge but yes. I have a course 20 ish min from me that I need to get out to more. It's quite a nice way to exercise.
I've been keeping my eye on that set. There are some frisbee golf courses around that I would like to try. Could be a good way to get our family outside.
Any of these 3 packs is perfectly fine for a beginner. It's definitely the low-end, but that's ok to start out. It will definitely give you a feel for the game, and is a far superior experience compared to other people I've seen try to use a regular Frisbee from Kmart.
I've played Disc golf before, quite a long time ago. I don't remember what we used. Probably hired some discs.
I was hoping to get a set for under $30 or something and just take the family out to one of the free disc golf courses around. If it's something they enjoy and want to invest some time in we could always upgrade some discs.
The Discraft 145 Gram White J-Star is also $10 cheaper at $19.24 instead of ~$35. This is suitable for those with smaller people. I've been trying to use the standard 175g at our games, but some people have difficulty, this bridges the gap to allow everyone in our group to play.
I'm not judging small people, but does 30 grams make that much of difference?
For me, I'd rather the 175g, but to the people that complain about the 175g being to heavy, it actually does make quite a difference to them. They're coming from those frisbees with the hole in them, super light. I'm trying to wean them onto an actual disc.
im gonna try the 145gram - is it the same circumference? does it float/fly any differently to the 175?
i.e. is it an inferior frisbee at the expense of weight?
@plentifoo: The Jstar is smaller. The diameter is 24cm vs the Ultrastar at 27cm. They have done well too imitate the quality of the Ultrastar though. I always carry both.
Aaaannd its gone
Life is complete now that I know i can get profressional grade frisbees
Safe for use with my dog?
It's listed under dog toys, but I wouldn't recommend it as a dog toy, though possible.
As said above somewhat; it is the generally accepted official flying disc used for a specific sport called "Ultimate", so while it is indeed just a piece of plastic, it is highly specfically engineered and precise to some people.
Discraft, the company based in the USA, has made significant investment in the past few years to start competing with relatively good improvements in Chinese made inferior (but recently nearly identical) knock-offs. I can highly recommend, though this price has now expired, the price of $20 is quite rare for a public offering.
Nearly sarcastic, professional disc, but there are indeed a rare few people actually making a living from throwing specifically these pieces of plastic! :)
$30 discounted to $20 for a piece of plastic hmmmm
