looking a cheap and good for general gaming & movie laptop

Hi guys,

I think my desktop is dying, blue screen keep popping up and sometimes don't start, so i think it's time to move on (it's been 5 years ). Since im doing less gaming now due to work reason & less space, i think i will go for laptop with pretty decent graphic card and can play HD movie no problem especially blue ray format. I will mainly use it for work, surfing and movie these days, but i do play some Guild Wars 2 once in a blue moon. The problem is i been a desktop guy for that long, i don't even know what's a good laptop deal in the market for a laptop anymore. If you see any bargain, please help! Thanks!

    Comments:

The Clevo laptop looks to be the best value in terms of dollar to performance ratio. You also get a nice 1080p screen.
If only gaming casually the Toshiba is a fairly good value system.

    • just not too sure of the Horize brand though …never head before to be honest..

Oh btw, when i mentioned bluray i just meant those downloaded version, not actual bluray player XD

      • Clevo is an OEM laptops producer. They make laptops for other companies (not sure which) but they've been around for a long time.

  • i would say less than $1k…

    Thanks for that list!

  • There's also this one: http://www.msy.com.au/product.jsp?productId=9691

    i7, SSD and also GT640m

Acer cashback makes it $750 which is an awesome deal!

    • any feedback or comment on Acer brand? is the warranty service good in Aus?

      • Their build quality is fairly average, sometimes mediocre at best.

Customer service is quite good. They actually dispatch an Acer rep at Whirlpool to look for whinge threads and often responds to them.

  • I have a Horize laptop as a back up. It's only a $300,- laptop and my mother uses it now for basic browsing and emailing. I have done a lot or researching on laptops and Clevo/Horize seems to be quite a good brand. Whirlpool can be your friend

  • ok i prepare to raise my budget to 1500, anyone know any deals around for I7 quad core laptop available?

  • Ok guys, since i always got my pc stuff from MSY. Could you please suggest what would be the best buy in term of performance to price in the list below? Just too confusing. The only ones i would avoid are those with integrated graphic & win 8 system. Preferably something good under $1k.

    • The best buy in the $1000 range would be the Asus N56-R501VZ-S423H6 which sells for $1099.
It has a quad core version of the i7, a fairly powerful GT650 and 1080p screen.

      Altnernatively there is a 17.3 ASUS N76-R701VZ-T1155H for $1399.
Similar specs, has more RAM and a 1TB hard drive, and might be suitable as a desktop replacement (heavy at 2.6 kilos though).

Comes with Windows 8, but I think you'll get over it fairly quickly once you install the Classic Start menu which also bypasses Metro.

      • Thanks mate! had the same thought. I might try bargain it down to below 1k

      • argh dam..that asus batch they have got no backlight! =( what a shame! That's probably why they sell it so cheap!
