Spencer St Fashion Station Melbourne CBD

Hi, thought I’d do a post about Spencer St Fashion Station next to the Southern Cross train station in Melbourne CBD. My workplace moved down the street in November last year and I’ve been going to this place ever since. I really don’t understand why people don’t go there as I found some great bargains over the last few months.

I’m only going to list a few shops here which I like and go all the time, but there are many other shops which you can go to and you might find heaps of bargains in them as well. Unfortunately their website is down at the moment (they had one before but I think they’re doing a whole revamp of the place so they’re probably going to update the website too), so you can’t check which stores they have, but feel free to send me a message and I can check for you. I walk past the place every morning and every night after work. If there is a particular item you want to check the price for, feel free to let me know too and I can go and check for you. I didn’t want to post this in the deals sections as I really haven’t looked at any of the prices carefully so I don’t want to mislead anyone.

Sportscraft – Extra 40% off sale stock. Pretty much everything in the shop is on sale. Sizes are quite limited but if you look carefully, you might still find something you like. I got a Sportscraft signature shirt in a black and beige abstract print for $29.97 and yesterday bought a blue jersey crew neck long sleeve top for $23.40, it’s made of 30% wool and 70% modal. For guys, there were a lot of different styles of shorts, and lots of checked and striped work shirts. I haven’t examined the sizes and prices properly though.
Veronika Maine – Final Sale. There were some dresses at 70% off and I think they ended up being around $90 which is quite good for this brand.

Industrie – Really good range of clothes for guys. They have cool shirts which you can wear casually and to work for $25 to $30 and lots of different styled shorts for $20. I even found a pair of black work pants for hubby for $20. Bargain.

Hardy Amies – Great British brand and very nice crisp work shirts for guys. They also do a small but nice range of leather belts, ties and cufflinks. Not sure about the current sale, but they had a small sign on the door with 50% off all stock for a long time, it’s possible that this sale might still be on. After the 50% off, I think all the belts, ties, cufflinks are just below $40, and the shirts are around $60. Not the cheapest, but these are really fancy, French cuff shirts, so might be worth it for special occasions.
Cotton On Kids – lots of little bargains here. Pants for $10, and lots of different t-shirts from $5 or so. Sometimes you might find an even cheaper bargain buried amongst the rest, I recently got a Snoopy t-shirt for my 15 months old for $3.50.

Ninewest – up to 60% off sale. Sale just started recently so I haven’t been inside to check the actual prices. They had an extra 30% off sale stock promotion recently and I think some of the shoes ended up being less than $40.

Wittner – They’re having a selection of shoes for $50 a pair. The sale only started recently so I haven’t checked the exact range yet. Feel free to let me know if you’d like me to check a particular pair for you.
Brand House Direct – they sell brands like Hush Puppies, Naturlizer and Julius Marlow to name a few. Currently having $59 for two pairs on a range of women’s sandals and flats from Naturalizer, Natural Sport and etc. I usually find their Julius Marlow dress shoes for guys to be quite good, after the Boxing Day sale they had an extra 30% off which made the final price to be around $40 something. I haven’t checked when I went yesterday but once again, happy to check for you if anyone’s interested.

House - Always got some sort of sale on. Great for random gifts for people you'll only meet once a year at a Christmas party. I got a few of stainless steel Avanti Champagne bottle stoppers in a nice presentation box just before Christmas for $4.50 each. Ended up getting one for myself too.

OK, I think I’ve written way too much. I’m not in any way associated with the place, just thought that it’s time for me to share my bargains around and get more people to come and check out and support the place. Hopefully with enough exposure, they’ll utilise all the empty spaces in here and open more shops in the near future!

  • It used to be a DFO. Once DFO took away that branding and moved to South Wharf, both customers and shops moved away as well. Also, when it was still a DFO, I heard people complained that the discounts were not as much as the suburban DFOs.

I went to the Spencer St Fashion Station on Saturday to redeem my free $20 FILA voucher (got a new pair of sneakers for $10 cash!). The overall place is deserted. About 50% of the shops are empty and another 10% were closed. A lot of shopkeepers looked pretty bored. Not much customers either. Also, nearly all the television displays showed a Chrome error page.

I do hope the place revives, even if just as a normal shopping mall. I've seen a few media articles that they are trying to do a refresh. It's in a pretty convenient location and it's a waste of space (and probably money) to have so many vacant shops.

  • They are doing a refresh and rebranding it spencer outlet mall.
Agree there can be some good bargains there

  • I have also had some great experiences there as I work opposite.

Half of the great shops have disappeared over the last couple of months. I hope the country road comes back at some point.

  • They should have kept it as factory outlets. Why would you go there when you could go to Melbourne Central which is really really good now. It used to be good to browse for outlet bargains, but to capture an ideal cashed up target market (ie. people wandering past on their way home from work) they shut stores too early.

  • Some good memories at the DFO - I used to visit Melbourne almost monthly (my record is 9 times in a year - uni student, cheap, nothing better to do) and that was one of my main reasons before South Wharf came along. There you have it - that alone was enough to entice me to grab $30 return flights for a day just to shop there. It was a great arrival/departure spot with the airport shuttle bus and all. I was pretty bummed when I visited last year and saw it dying :(
