JFF 2025 Presents | The 1930s: When Japanese Film Found Its Voice

The Japanese Film Festival Special Series returns to ACMI in 2025 and proudly presents a FREE series of films from the 1930s, a defining decade for Japanese film. Following the introduction of “talkies”, or films made with sound, directors forged new visual languages and narrative styles that would shape the nation’s film industry for generations to come.

From the 6-9 November, ACMI in Melbourne will screen the films:

• An Actor's Revenge (dir. Teinosuke Kinugasa)
• Tange Sazen and the Pot Worth a Million Ryō (dir. Sadao Yamanaka)
• The Masseurs and a Woman (dir. Hiroshi Shimizu)
• The Only Son (dir.Yasujirō Ozu)
• The Story of the Last Chrysanthemums (dir. Kenji Mizoguchi)
• Three Sisters with Maiden Hearts (dir. Mikio Naruse)
• Woman of the Mist (dir. Heinosuke Gosho)

    Just seeing the heading many may dismiss looking any further, what a shame - unfortunately not well titled.
