      From my research depends on your workloads… But for games, usually games don't use more than 8 cores and again, my understanding is interconnects between the 9800 are better for gaming as they all use a shared cache or somthing..

      The difference in cores doesn't make a huge difference in games (more cores slightly slower for to cache layout), more cores is better for productivity apps that make use of more cores.
      But unless you are using the cores they are just wasted as well

      9800X3D is better for gaming. The 9900X3D only has 6 cores that can access the V-Cache, whereas the 9800X3D, all of its 8 cores can access the V-Cache. For the 9900X3D, Windows 11 will park (make idle) the cores that don't have access to the V-Cache if it detects your active window is a game; this is for performance reasons since consumer CPUs don't have the interconnects that are reserved for EPYCs to transfer data quickly between CCDs. Talking about CCDs, the 9800X3D has 8 cores that can access the V-Cache because they're all on the single CCD that it has (that works), whereas the 9900X3D has two CCDs, just like the 9950X3D.

          Yeah the 9950X3D (not to be confused with the 9950X) is very similar to the 9800X3D for gaming. And yeah the 9950X3D can perform up to 2x better than the 9800X3D for workloads that can use all the cores, like file compression.

          • @stirfry: Was going to see if I got a new CPU as rma replacement for my dead CPU, if the shop would sell me (for the difference in cost);between the 9800x3d and the 9950x3d… it's msy, so probably not, but worth asking.

        • Not sure how representative that reddit screenshot is, I've compiled some screenshots from HUB which shows about a 30-40% +-1% uplift compared to a 13% uplift in that specific photo

          In HUB's latest battlefield benchmark it shows a 50% uplift, so obviously it depends on what you play.
          You don't particularly play Cyberpunk 2077 on a year old patch on those specific settings that were used in that screenshot do you?
          Look into benchmarks for the specific games you play because sometimes there isn't much CPU scaling anyways
