iPhone 13 for Mother in Law (MIL) and Highschooler. Kogan?

Hello All,

MIL needs a new mobile phone becuase her current one does not dial 000…yes that is a thing….
Daughter is also starting highschool next year and needs a phone.

I am targeting iPhone 13 which is still functional…can be upgraded to the latest iOS and just simply does the job.

I am looking at purchasing from the Kogan marketplace for under $500.

Just wanted thoughts and experiences. Anything bad about Kogan? Any other recommendations where I can buy?

Thanks all….

Stulte…

Make sure you don't buy an import phone, that's why the current phone cannot call 000. Kogan sells a lot of grey imports and will not be easy to deal with if you have a warranty issue, etc.

Issue seems to be related to older Samsung phones only.

It’s not a manufacturer issue (I.e not specific to Samsung). There has been a lot of communications about this months before 000 was switched off for those devices.

It is to do with the telecommunication bands of the device, most overseas phone models don’t support the bands used in Australia. Additionally, some older phones utilised 3G for emergency calling which has now been switched off in Australia.

        • The issue with most overseas phones isn't the frequency bands used in Australia being unsupported by the phone. Most overseas phones do support the majority of Australian frequency bands. The issue is whether the phone has the correct software to make the call over 4G, even if it needs to use the cell towers of another carrier in case of an outage with one carrier's cell tower.

The blocking of phones feels very arbitrary and I feel there is probably some hidden political reasons involved too. My grandparents has an old Xiaomi phone imported from China, and it was blocked. However, it can call 000 over 4G just fine, although I can't test whether it would switch to another carrier's tower when the current tower isn't functioning. (When you call 000 you get an automated message first and are not connected to a human straight away, as long as you hang up in time you don't need to worry about wasting an operator's time when there is no emergency)

im glad you put (MIL) in brackets as I wasn't sure what a mother in law was

    • I think he left out the F in MIL.

  • Embarassed to disclose I've purchased from them before; iPhone 8 for a friend, rock bottom price. Grading was wholly unacceptable but when you're spending little and trading offshore it's just not worth the considerable effort to process a return. Lesson learned. Don't trade with marketplaces; go with resellers who manage their own inventory: e.g. Phonebot, Ozmobiles, Cashies

  • Worked out pretty well for us buying an IPhone 12 last year from GreenGadgets. The phone turned out to be a Japan model but it had all the Australian frequency bands (and a few more). You pay a bit more for their higher grade units, but worth it.

    • Did yours have the mandatory camera shutter sound that cannot be turned off?

      • No - the shutter sound can be silenced (checked just now - never thought of it as an issue)

iPhone 13 for Mother in Law (MIL) and Highschooler.

Seems like a fair trade. You can keep the MIL though.

I read it that she is his MIL and in highschool. Either Tasmania or Mt Druitt.

can be upgraded to the latest iOS and just simply does the job.

That would also apply to iPhone 11 &12. Still good phones.

  • Normally such an abbreviation would be followed by an F.

That's why you would never describe it that way.

I would never buy an iPhone from Kogan again, two weeks after purchase Face ID completely stopped working (no accidental/user damage at all). Took it to the Apple Store and they denied me service because it was a refurbished device. Be warned

    • Appreciate the comment…but the fact that Apple wouldnt help you because it was a refurb….that isnt a Kogan specific issue. That would have happened with any place you purchased from.

I would also think….whatever happened to stop face ID from working could have happened on any re-furbed phone.

I guess the ultimate question here is….are refurbed phones from Kogan any worse than refurbed phones from any other supplier ?
