You're probably thinking of the prequel, The Forest, which has been under 10 bucks multiple times
Predecessor, not prequel.
Set in the same universe as The Forest, 16 years after the first game. The protagonist of The Forest even shows up in Sons of the Forest, so I think fair to describe the latter as a sequel. The Wiki describes it as such too

I picked it up on sale a couple of months back and I can honestly say that it's a game I will play sometime soon.

Bought it because a lot of my friends have it. (Sorry exaggerating, only have 3 or 4 friends)
With only 646 hours of play time I can honestly say it's an OK game if anything somewhat unfinished. But it's still the best tree chopping simulator I've ever played.
With 646 hours I would hope you would have got the chainsaw at some point.
One of the best games to play with friends
The Forest is such a good game. Spent countless hours on the prequel with mates building crazy forts and setting up traps. We got so excited during the announcement of Sons, followed the development and progression, pre-ordered on alpha etc. then age caught up to us and now we're all too old and busy to play it by the time it came out…..
One day we'll get back onto it boys. If it's anything like the first, grab this game and play with your mates.
Both this and the original are some of my greatest ever coop games.

Bought this recently and it's the first game that I've enjoyed playing in well over 5 years. I honestly thought that I had simply 'grown out of gaming'. Sons of the forest, however, pushes all of the right AuDHD buttons, so I'm having a blast.
