If you're interested in security for your mobile phone, I've got some snake oil to sell you!

Oh, that's just an expert opinion advising that much like snake oil has uses, so too does mobile device malware protection. He must have missed the part about it being free though,y6

        • It's alright to disagree mate, keen to hear your expert opinion on why Joe Blow needs this.

Mobile operating systems aren't like your Windows or Linux, where a program can be easily ran and do whatever it wants. Apps on both iOS and Android are sandboxed and can only access exactly as much as you give them. So for example, even if you click on "downloadavirus.com", a virus couldn't access more than your browser has permission for, even then it is limited by browser APIs i.e. it has to ask for camera access, file access etc. This applies to all apps.

Really the most common way for viruses to infect a phone is your Appstore or Google Play Store, downloading "Super Flashlight Pro" and giving it access to your phone, contacts, storage. This is the only thing these "Mobile Security" apps can really do, they can check if an installed app or downloaded file matches a known bad app or file. However, even if you install "This is a Virus" app, it can't do anything you don't give it permission to do.

TLDR: phones are different to computers, the best way to stay safe is stick to reputable apps, look at what permissions you're giving away, and keep your phone up to date.
