Not bad if you are looking to maximise QFF points and have a Amex Explorer card or similar..
You can then transfer to QFF at a rate of 2:1.
Eg..
100,000 MR points = 96,000 Everyday Rewards points = 48,000 QFF points
Transfer Minimum 500 American Express Membership Rewards Points to Everyday Rewards for Bonus 20% Extra Points

As compared to 100K MR convert to 50K QFF Why lose 10K QFF points?
lower tier AMEX (and those not on a Qantas program - i.e. AMEX Explorer) cannot transfer directly to QFF. This is the workaround at nearly the same rate.
What a waste. Only $60/10000MR.
Good option if your card doesn't allow a direct transfer to Qantas.

Qantas Points are useless! I use my American AAdvantage points to book the virtually non-existent Qantas Business class domestic flight for half the points and half the taxes! And Virgin has many many rewads/upgrade seats when compared to PALTRY KWANTAS

For those not going the QFF path, then my calcs say it is better to buy wish gift cards than convert to everyday rewards points.
Eg 100k Amex -> 96k ER -> $480
100k Amex can get a $500 wish egift card.You can redeem 100k Amex points into paying off the balance of the card. So you don't even need to get gift cards.

From memory 200k points = 1k. So same as Battler said 100k = $500
if i just use pts for discount at the checkout, is it still better conversion rate with the 20% upgrade? or better leaving the amex points for paying off transaction on the card?
No point, you can redeem MR into cash, probably better value than 20% extra ER!
I'd anticipate gift cards may be better than cash but don't have time to calculate - may be worth a look tho.
