They can take our lives, but they will never take our freedom Brother laser printers

    • if you don't know, brother have been releasing firmware updates that block thirdparty toner..

and thats why all my brother printers have auto- update set to no

      • Yes I do know. Disabled auto fw updates immediately after turning it on the first time.

  • How much does it cost to replace a set of toners for this?

    • $457.89 for full "compatible" set.
      $472 for full OEM set.
$1045 for a full OEM High Yield set.

Seems like the OEM high yield set is the best value at around 17.4c/page @ 20% average coverage, 87c/page @ 100%.
You'd want to do a fair bit of printing to make it worthwhile.

So might as well just get a new printer

        • Most printers these days don't come with full cartridges, but "starter" cartridges.

          • @Chris McMahon: This Lexmark comes with full toners.

My ecotank came with 2 years of ink.

              @jv: One man's 2 years of ink is another man's 2 weeks.

              • @Chris McMahon: OK… somewhere near 5,000 pages (10 reams) over 2 years…

replacement ink is about $120 total for 4 colours for another 2 years.

(So around 2 cents per page for the ink.)

                • @jv: I looked up the specs and yes they claim 1500 pages (5% coverage per colour, 4x colour =20% coverage) cartridges in box.

So it is cheaper to buy a new printer than a full set of 1500 page cartridges.

But if you expect to print >7500 pages, it's cheaper to buy the 6k page cartridges.

                  1x printer & a set of 6k cartridges (7500 pages) = $1445, cost per page 19c
                  5x printers (7500 pages) = $2000, cost per page 27c

Shipping would also favour the 1x printer, 6k cartridge option as it's cheaper to ship 1x set of 4 cartridges, than 4x printers.

    Replacement toner kills the deal

  • I remember there is a sim card come with the toner to "activate" the toner, not sure if Lexmark still going that path.
