Cheap and reasonable Notary Public in Melbourne to certify documents

Hi everyone,
I need to get 3 to 4 documents notarised by a Notary Public for a Canadian work visa. I'm in Melbourne, and the best offer was $88/document, which is pretty steep. Does anyone know of any kind hearted Notary Public in Melbourne who can do a good deal?
Thanks!

  • Is a notary the same as certifying a document? When I needed to do immigration stuff, I went to my local police station and they stamped all my copies for free.

  • For an Australian visa I had documents certified by a Justice of the Peace. There was no charge. Don't know where you're located but here's a link to Maribyrnong Council http://www.maribyrnong.vic.gov.au/Directory/CategoryList.asp…

  • I dont know if a notary public is any different to signing a Stat Dec. I have had to have a few Stat Decs signed recently and i went to my local chemist. I had to wait until they had served all of their paying customers (fair enough) but they signed my stat decs for free.

I also had a couple of docs certified as true copy at the Post Office, cost me about $9 I think.

  • Dear all, Thanks for your comments.
I can only get my documents certified by a Notary Public as it is the only form accepted by the Canadian Immigration for work visas. Unfortunately JoP, chemists and police constables do not cut it with them. Notary Publics are usually legal professionals who have been appointed by the state.

    • Would the Canadian Embassy offer such a service?

It seems a service they should offer and be knowledgable about the actual requirements at the same time

  • Hi OP, I went to a notary public about a year or two back back. Still remember it was on Rathdowne St, did a search and found the name - Tony French. Like you, I called around and found him to be the most reasonable. From memory, he charged me about $55. He was a nice chap, hence why I didn't mind googling to find his contact for you.

    • Thank you for the info. I got notarized an agreement today & he did it for very reasonable fee.

      • Pleased to know that a comment I made 2.5 years ago has helped you! :)

      • Hi. How much did he charge you? Is it still 55$? Thank you

Basically, internationally recognised version of a JP.

  • I got some documents certified by a Notary Public in Melbourne at the end of last year. The impression I got was that they all seem to charge the same rate $80 (excluding GST) which means it will cost you $88.

In the end I went with this guy: John Pearce

Booked a 15 min slot online, and it was pretty straight forward and painless (except for the $88 charge :) )

  • Hi greenpossum,
Thanks for your comment. The documents are my Australian passport and the work visa application form which I would need the Notary Public to witness my signing the form and for him/her to put his/her seal on it.

    Hi ohsnap, mskeggs,
Thank you for your recommendations. I will follow up on the leads. Looks like at the moment, $55 would be the cheapest. Thank you all! Much appreciate your help.

    Hi ropdoh,
Did John Pearce charge $88 per document? Or was it $88 per 15 minute timeslot, and maybe do 3 to 4 documents within that slot for $88? Thanks for your help.

    • I had him do a power of attorney document, and an ID document both for $88

Probably best to call and double check first though, especially if they are more complex documents. The ID was pretty straight forward to certify, but he did have a good read through the power of attorney document to see what it said.

  • Hi OP.Try http://www.annachenlawyers.com/notarial-services.html
    They are in Queen street,Melb.

  • Thanks ropdoh and bargainrus for your responses. Much appreciate it.

  • Sometimes its difficult to provide an estimate prior to me or another Notary sighting the docs, which is why it's probably a good idea to give a Notary a buzz first to get some advice and an estimate. Some Notary's charge by time, and some by the number of signatures and seals you require (which is nearly always the more expensive option).

In any case, to find a recognised Notary in Melbourne, try the www.NotaryLocator.com.au/VIC

    • How did you become a public notary?

  • Hi Ms Keggs,

To become a Notary, you have to have been admitted as a Solicitor to the Supreme Court. Plus you need to have held a Principal practising certificate for at least 5 years. On top of this, you have had to have undertaken a course of study in Notarial Practice and some other units at Victoria University, after which you are admitted to the Supreme Court as a Public Notary.

  • I got notarized an agreement today for very reasonable fee. I can Highly Recommend his service.
