Most people don't need a full internet security suite (mostly overkill and for the paranoid).
You can either go the free route (Avast!) or paid — e.g $15 Kaspersky

    Best way to avoid virus:

    1. Use Firefox or Chrome.
    2. Use the Adblock Plus addon for Chrome/FF.
    3. Don't install any browser Toolbars. Click "NO" or untick any checkboxes to software that insists on installing bloatware.
    4. Pirated software can harbor trojans and backdoors. Avoid when possible.
    5. (For advanced users only) Use Sandboxie to run programs that you do not trust and to visit websites that could be dangerous.
    6. Schedule scans with MalwareBytes on a weekly basis.
    7. Schedule Windows backup and use an external HDD to store copies of important info.

i thought this was quite funny: http://www.securityweek.com/new-york-times-hacking-highlight…

The New York Times noted in the report that during the course of the breach, attackers installed 45 pieces of malware. It appears the company's antivirus product from Symantec detected and quarantined only one of them. In response, Symantec pointed out that the New York Times should not have just relied on the antivirus product for its security.
