Mobile Phone Extended Warranty from Dick Smith

Hi, today I bought a mobile phone at Dick Smith, priced at $199, and the salesman offered an extended warranty of another 12 months (24 months in total) for $15.

Has any one got experience with using the extended warranty? Does it worth $15? Is it easy to exchange a new product or money back in future?

Please share such information a little bit. Thanks.

EDIT: I just read the policy, and it says "we cover wear and tears". What does this really mean?

  • It's worth $0

I my iPad 2's microphone died after 1.5 years, Apple said they have a 1 year warranty unless you pay more. I used that pamplet (you can request a free copy http://www.accc.gov.au/content/index.phtml/itemId/1030166 )

Bam, was told to take it into an Apple Authorised Service centre… 10 days later all is well.

If you have time, read the Dick Smith "extended warrenty" agreement you'll laugh at how much they don't cover.

P.S. I'm really tired so I hope I made sense.

    • i see… i should not have bought it…

  • I got the last phone DSE had and for some strange reason they forced Extended Warranty on me. Except they charged $29. Well close enough, the price in store for the phone was $149, they gave me free 12 months extended warranty worth $29. I have a feeling the phone scanned in as $120 and they con'ed me. If it didn't scan in at $120 and they really offered me an extra free 12 months warranty that would have been good but if I ever wanted to return the item (change of mind) or something went wrong in the first 12 months. I would only get the $120 instead of the full $149 I paid. I wasn't alert when I made the transaction, because I do know Extended Warranties are pretty useless as explained above. I kind of felt like the Salesman was trying to scam me a bit but what would they have to gain after all I believe they get paid a fixed rate.

Just another Wednesday night rant… really my fault for not being alert.

    • that was similar to what happened to me

  • Extended Warranty is pure profit.
