Carpark lost ticket charge

Can anybody tell me how the lost ticket charge works in car parks. For example if I parked my car for a week but then "lost" the ticket, do I just get charged the lost ticket fee or would they have some way of knowing that I have been there for a week?

  • They'll know. Guards will patrol the carpark at night and note down any cars still there. Newer car parks now have number plate recognition which notes the entry and exit times. You will notice that your ticket has a print out of your registration on the ticket.

I think it would depend on the car park. Unless they towed or clamped the car, what hope have they got of stopping you. Surely the auto pay ticket machine has an option for lost ticket. You just pay the money, get in your car and drive to the exit. Even if they did know you were there all week, how can they charge it if it isn't listed on their schedule of fees board. Maybe just ring the help centre and tell them your car has broken down and you can't get it for the night blah blah. Find out what they do about supposed abandoned cars.

  • Bit risky, given it might end up towed as an abandoned car.

  • Grab a new ticket on the way in and pay with that

    1. Get another car to drive up and issue new ticket
    2. Car reverses away out of parking driveway
    3. Use new ticket to pay for parking
    4. ????
    5. Profit!
    • I tried this one, but the ticket will have problem when you pay.
As they knew the car didn't go though the gate! The ticket will be void.
Lucky that I ring up after hours and the speaker is so bad for him check my ticket number and let me out paying for evening rate.
      But don't risk it!

LOL, tried that before, they cancel the ticket

    EDIT: Beaten!

So suppose you have a few options.

    1. Drive up in one car, get a ticket, reverse back out of the car park. Use that ticket to leave.
    2. Go in with another car, use that ticket to leave. Have the other cars owner claim a lost ticket and pay the lost ticket fee.

Also don't some car parks open up their boom gates after hours so everyone can leave quickly?

    • That would work, but I don't have a Sydney friend to help me :(

I would be more worried about the state of my car, when returning.

I'd make sure the insurance was up to date.

    • They have cameras..

I've been in that unfortunate situation before — I had to pay $23 for the lost card and another $18 for a whole days' parking in a suburban centre — nothing I could do so I just took the pain, but won't forget it. In CBD car parks all-day parking can cost $45-50 or more, and some charge $120 for a lost ticket, so it can be a very costly business!

If it's a shopping centre car park, you can always go there during the peak exiting time just after all the shops close, and in the queue hope the security guy will just let you out. most car parks have a credit card payment feature using the same slot you put in the plastic card; but if it's a paper card you should be ok, once you have a line of cars behind you, you cannot reverse, so the attendant has to let you go in most cases. some people would gum up the card slots at the boom gate, but if there are multiple gates, you would be redirected to another gate.

The best bet would be getting someone on a motorbike to get you a ticket and then drive out through the footpath exit.

  • Where in Sydney do you want to park?

    • Maybe The Star, somewhere close to Kings Wharf

      • +2

You can possibly park your car at The Star for weeks or months, they wont bother. But they know when you entered, they have records for the number plates and will charge you a grand for the parking fee if you lost your card…. ;-P

  • +2

Just for the record, what crime would this be?

    Stealing by deception?

    Fraud?

Lol, can't believe that took that long. Where would we be without people like you. Oh and not to mention that car parks are more than happy to charge you for a whole day if you have parked for 5 minutes and lost your ticket. I guess that is ok though, heaven forbid they get a bit of their own back.

      • +5

It's because of people like you, no one trusts anyone anymore.

It's because of you people who have parked for 5 minutes and lost their ticket get charged for a day.

I wonder why you don't have a Sydney friend.

Post your question on Ozscam not Ozbargain

I was against this comment at first but if you think about it, the poster seems like he is trying to outwit a legitimate system in an attempt to save some cash. OzBargain is for saving cash the legal way buddy.

  • I think most carparks have a maximum charge and youd probably have to pay that

    • That is what I am thinking, a lost ticket charge, which would be like a daily maximum. But if they know I have been there longer then they would probably charge more.

      • Maybe just give them a call and say whats happened probably quicker the better and see what they say. It doesnt sound like its going to be cheap though. Or I guess you could try and do what samfisher5986 said below and try and get a new ticket. Not sure if thatd work though. I guess you could drive up press the button get the ticket and then reverse out, but theyd have all video cameras etc so it probly wouldnt work. Yeah I dunno give them a call I guess n start saving

Wouldn't the best idea be to walk up to the ticket machine and press it for a new one?

It would work as long as it didn't require the car to be there to issue a ticket.

      See above about car sensors.

Smartest, best, safest, and common thing that can get done is basically just wait to another car near the exit, wait patiently as another car approaches, like
mr bean, then turn on your headlights and way out you go!!!!

    • +1

Lol, I am not THAT dodgy :)

      • This whole thing sounds pretty dodgy… Just do what the right thing is to do :)

    • Actually if you're going to do something dodgy like that you should get the details right. You wait for a victim near the entrance, hope it's a small car and not a 4WD, and force your way through, headlights blazing. LOL

      • That could work ;)

  • -1

    what about this;
1-get a friend(or a bum and pay him 5 bucks!) to stand by the boom gate
2-when someone comes through entry(or exit whichever doesn't have a security camera!) your friend(accomplice?!) holds the boom gate open a few seconds while you zip out!
3-spend your ill gotten savings on more ozB junk….

    • +3

2a. Boom gate motor burns out due to human obstruction and alarms go off.
2b. Bum gets charged with wilful damage to property.

  • Ok, so this is not going that well. Next question…cheapest place to park in Sydney for 4 days? I am happy to use airport parking and make my way into the city, I just don't know which ones are reputable.

    • +5

A few weeks ago I parked my car in the city for quite a few days for free by hiding it inside a big yellow duck.

    • +3

lol… shifty parker wants reputable parking.

I think OzBargain has hit a new low.

    • +1

I agree. I've not a clue why the mods are allowing this thread to continue. Makes me embarrassed to be a member of OzBargain really.

Helping a person with absolutely no morals try and commit premeditated fraud against a company is not what most of us come here for, I'm sure.

What the OP is trying to do is no different than swapping the price tickets on two items in a shop.

  • +3

Just park it on the street in Burwood/Strathfeld wherever you can find a stretch of road without signs. Then catch a bus/train into town.

  • Thread closed — looks like OP has got his/her answer.

For those questioning the moderators' lack of action,

    1. Just from the initial question itself posted by the OP it could be a genuine question "what happened if I lost my parking ticket?"
    2. It's nice to have the moral side of OzBargain coming out to comment on this (and some get supports from others in the form of +1 comment votes).

Yes OzBargain is about saving the money. However deliberately trying to cheat against the authority (car parks in this case) would not be an activity we want to endorse.
