Launching DealOn.com.au (Site where you can review deals)

Hi Ozbargainers,

We have just launched www.dealon.com.au. We are simply trying to be a review site in daily deal site niche.

  • We collect deals from top 7 deal sites (Groupon, Living Social, etc.) everyday.
  • Over 800 new deals are added to our database each week. Our staff go through all new deals and pick deals that they would recommend to their friends. Check out our staff pick section (www.dealon.com.au/staff_pick_deals.html).
  • Our main goal is to build a community of people who buy deals from deal sites. Thing of us as a review site where members can:
    • write reviews on deals
    • discuss deals
    • vote on deals

Please check it out and provide us some feedback that would help us make the site better. Please be kind as its our first project.

We doing a weekly $20 draw for people who write reviews. Considering this is a new site, there aren't that many members competing for that prize.

  • It's more of an aggregator with an "editorial team" isn't it?

Also on your About Us page, near the end it says "Follow @DealOnAustralia on Twitter" — the link is missing an "u" there so might want to get the typo fixed.

  • Hi Scotty,
Thanks for your feedback. I can see why you could think that. At moment we do look more like an aggregator. We intentionally setup the homepage that way, as we don’t have any user review and comment data in the site. Hopefully, as the site grows we would update it to look more like Tripadvisor, Yelp rather focusing on new deals.

Being an avid deal buyer, I felt there is a void where one could have sense of community for deals. Surprisingly there wasn’t a one place you could go find historical reviews of suppliers and discuss deals with other people.
    Let hope it works .

Will fix the typo. Thanks for pointing it out :)

  • review the cream of the group buy rubbish?

    • Hi,
I didn't fully understand what you meant. But our intention is to filter out the best deals. All deal vouchers I have bought in past few years all happened to be from the top sites. So, it didn't make sense to populate the site with deal i wouldn't buy myself.
When we started the site, I was actually surprised to see how many deals are actually released each week. On average we are adding roughly 1000 unique deals in a week around Australia. So, for now I go through all new Sydney deals and pick the ones I would recommend to my friends in staff pick section. I analyze then based on price, merchant reviews and fine print.

In terms of review, like everything you expect a bell curve like any industry. Some deals are great, some are ok and some are really bad. I have been burnt few times myself. Hopefully, this would be reflected on the site. We do have created sections for deal suppliers and deal site representatives to post announcements and communicate with customers directly. Understandably, we first need to get members contributing on the site before we can get the reps on board :).

  • We just added Cudo to our deal feed as I feel they do infact provide great deals as I personally buy from them from time to time. We should be only deal aggregator with Cudo. Stay tuned our team is working on adding Travelzoo to our deal feed.

  • We are pleased to announce that we have made quiet a few major changes to our site:

    1. Added following sites:
      a. Scoopon
      b. Bizzbuzz
      c. Travelzoo

    2. We get fine prints of various deals. That way you dont have to go visit the sites deal page.

    3. We grab reviews from Eatability, Yelp, Tripadvisor, ProductReview for the supplier if it is available.

    4. We launched a newsletter where we include max 4 deals per subscribers. Aim is to bring it down to 2 deals and more deal providers.

We are working on bigger changes to filter out deals where we only show 1-2 deals per site and try to get quality rather than quantity. So, stay tuned.

    • Just being nosey, how are you making money from the site? Selling banner advertising, or you strike up a deal with the deal sites individually?

      • Luckily we are not concerned about making money as yet. This allows us to adapt quickly and add any new features as required. A lot of features are added based how we see the industry to be in next few years and also feedback we get from current users. Also, I personally spend lot of time chasing great deas. So, there is quite a bit of personal touch. Like:

        • I actually buy deals from Scoopon, Bizzbuzz and Travelzoo more than from other deal sites. As a result it made sense to add them.

Note: You will notice that above sites are not part of other big deal aggregators.
If you have any suggestions, I am sure we might be able to accomodate.

Going forward, we are moving away from typical Daily Deal sites. Next our developers are working on adding Zavvi and Hut deals.

        • Luckily we are not concerned about making money as yet.

Good for you but how long can you continue like that, DO you have a reasonably clear path to cashflow.

    • +1

"we have made quiet a few major changes to our site"

How? Did you change from all upper case? Why would you want to quieten down major changes?

      • Sorry didn't understand what you meant.

        • +1

"Sorry didn't understand what you meant."

I meant that you can't spell.

          quiet - quite

        • :). Thanks for pointing it out. That's pretty weak on my part.

  • Daily deal sites are dead, don't see much voting/commenting on your site either.

    • See thread in relation to discussion about deadness of daily deal sites (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/104987). As per my comment at the bottom in that thread you will notice that we are still learning and adapting as we go along.

We beleive that we certainly have better content as compared to other deal aggregators. However, we are still working towards making it better.

  • "Daily deal sites are dead"

And so go the 'hangers on' - "deal aggregation" etc.

  • Thing of us as a review site where members can:
    write reviews on deals
    discuss deals
    vote on deals

    THING or THINK ?

    • Think. Another typo on my part :).

  • This business of only showing 1 or 2 deals from each site, implying quality, is why I am not interested in your site.

Just remove all shithouse product deals and leave the rest.

    • Just remove all shithouse product deals and leave the rest.

I agree. However, there would be very, very, few so called 'deals'/'bargains' left.

In fact, if one then also removed the bad and/or bad value and/or desperate restaurants - there would be no 'deals' left at all.

    • Thanks for suggestion. That is our goal for the site as well and we are slowly working towards it. At the moment we list few deals from top deal sites. So, thats the first step.

Understandably, the problem of finding "bad deals" is actually not that trivial. Having said that we are confident we will solve that problem. Just takes a bit of time and resources :).

  • +1

Mate good on you for trying to add another place where people can review the daily deal scams as some of them generally are ~ 30 to 40 %. Have you thought of How are you going to do it differently than say productreviewcom.au ?

I guess the good thing for you is once people find some deal that screwed them , they try and find every single place on the web where they can post their bad experience so eventually traffic will build up as deal sites keep screwing people over and over.

Just not sure how your cashflow model is going to be.

    • Thanks for suggestion. Thats actually the change we are putting in the next week. The development is just a bit slow as our developer had personal issues.
Currently we had being able to review deals on the deal itself. That doesn't really work as we get 1000s of deal each month. So, any review is going to get lost in a massive pile. Instead we are putting in reviews section for underlying companies (eg. the actual restaurant providing the deal). That way the page is more static and searchable and you can see all the reviews and deals for that supplier.
Hopefully above change will go live in the next week.

  • Hi Guys,
We launched our first deal for $49 for Dinner for 2 at Encasa spanish restaurant. See details here: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/122189

  • This is obviously not a news for ozbargain community on how to get cheap movies via optus and telstra reward program.

I find it hard to believe there are so many people who dont know about it. Lots of my friends and relatives are not aware. In response for that I wrote this article and create simple image to explain it all.

I thought it might be of use to people here to easily convey message.

    • The redirect rule for 11movies actually did not work (somehow appended "RedirectMatch" at the end of the URL).

Lots of my friends and relatives are not aware

Yes there are a lot of Australian consumers need to be enlightened in many different things not just the $11 movie tickets.

      • I'll have to see how to fix it :). Need to get dev to fix it.

Either way, $11 movies, I actually did that a while ago. I figured I needed to do another version where its really simple.

I already have a list of 20 items so far. Plan is to do one each week.
At moment need to do obvious ones where it is hard to believe majority of people are not aware.

If you have any suggestion, let me know.
