[New Feature] New Media Uploader!

The old media uploader has been a quick hack file hosting script since pretty much the beginning of OzBargain. For the last 6 years it has served the community well — it allows people to share deals with uploaded images or PDF files.

However it sits on a different website — not hosted on the same server as OzBargain actually — and whenever you want to post an image you have to travel between two sites, which can be a tedious process.

That brings us to the NEW media uploader which we have deployed on OzBargain as of this morning.

  • It's built into the Deal Submission page. Under "URL/Link" text box, click on "Click Here to submit a picture or a PDF file" — that will bring down a button to let you upload an image or a PDF file directly, as well as last 10 images that you have previously uploaded. You can either upload a new image, or select an old image to fill in the URL/Link text box.

  • You can now also browse the images that you have previously uploaded. Click on "My Account" -> view -> files to browse your files. From this page you can also upload files independent from the deals, i.e. you might wish to upload some files to be linked from your comments. Note that all the files you've uploaded are publicly accessible (i.e. anyone with Internet connection can download your file), however your file listing is only available to you.

  • This should hopefully work well on our mobile sites. Tested on Android (on my Galaxy Nexus) so might still need testing on iOS.

  • It's hosted in Amazon S3 in Sydney. Old uploader was hosted with DreamHost in Los Angeles (20ms vs. 180ms ping). It means you should be able to download the shared vouchers / PDF files faster!

  • Maximum file size = 10MB. Maximum image resolution: 2048 x 2048 (will scale down if the image is too big).

  • We are in the process to migrate some of the files that you've previously uploaded to this new service — it's probably going to take the whole morning. Don't be alarmed when you go to your file listing page and see the files you've uploaded years ago :)

  • We might also provide alternate upload methods in the future. For mobile users for example — an app that you can quickly upload the photo you took at local Harvey Norman. Or just email upload+<your secret token>@ozbargain.com.au to save the file against your account so you can post that image later.

As with all the new features on OzBargain, there might be bugs and might break things so please report them in this thread and I'll try to get them resolved.

Enjoy!

Comments

  • Seems to work without a hitch - nice implementation.
As a side note: how do you remove irrelevant test pictures?

    • Sorry the files aren't removable at the moment, as there's no easy way for us to check whether the file has been link to elsewhere. We can check whether the files are posted as a deal but that's about it.

Maybe we'll let users to remove files that have not been posted as a deal in the future — that might mean that it would break links if they have been referenced in the post or in the comments.

      • Fair enough, here's hoping I never accidentally post my car as a deal ;-)

  • Cool! Good work Scotty :D

  • Shame I didn't know this was coming so I could compare speed for my own interest. To be honest, I never really noticed any speed issues but it's really snappy now nonetheless (I rarely click on larger images…).
