  i have two of these - got from COTD I beleive like years ago. One is still in the pack.

  I've been told they are EOL.

  Buy a Varta smart charger instead. They are sold everywhere in Australia, from Woolworths to Bunnings Warehouse.

  You get 4x AA Varta low self discharge batteries and a charger that is capable of USB and in-car charging. Very handy.

    I've seen the Varta ones. They can accept 5V USB input to charge batteries, but I don't believe they can output 5V to charge other devices such as mobiles or tablets from the USB port, or can they? That extra functionality is rather useful when travelling as AA batteries are portable and available everywhere.

      Nope, the charger will only charge batteries, but it won't output power via USB.

      I have 500F model and it is capable of outputting 5v at 1 amp. Not quite enough for some high-powered smartphones or tablets, as they will require 2 amps.

      Unfortunately the only place where you can purchase it is from eBay and the shipping isn't cheap:

      You will also require a travel adapter to use it, otherwise another option is to use one of these to directly power the charger.

      Another option is to just buy a power bank — the advantage is that a lithium power pack has a lot more energy density than regular NIMH batteries (less luggage to carry) and won't chew through so many batteries just to juice your phone.
