Cheap unlocked 3G phone for use on overseas trip to HK and Japan

I am leaving on a trip to HK and Japan on Friday. I have bought a woolies global roaming sim with a local number. I normally carry a huawei dual sim phone with me but I intend to setup forwarding for both of the local sims. What I would like is a cheapo unlocked 3G phone capable of working in HK and Japan. Japan apparently needs WCDMA/UMTS 2100 GHz. I was looking at the Samsung B2710 at Dick Smith for about $150. I'll be skiing in Japan so the added toughness of that phone may be handy!!

I wont need cameras/apps or fancy OS. Other option I've seen online is the Nokia C2-01 at JB for under $100. The phone might end up in a drawer when I get back so I dont want to invest too much. Any ideas for an unlocked phone I can pickup from a B&M shop in the next 2 days would be appreciated.

  • Both countries utilize 3G UMTS 2100mhz, so any 3G phone you buy here will work.

Nokia phones are all built like tanks, so just buy any one that you see has a relatively good battery life and go for it.

    • that includes the galaxy s3, iphone 3gs etc right (2100 mhz )?

I heard buying sims in was it japan or hk is strangely difficult? Anyone heard likewise?

It's good though heading to asian countries like msia, one sim upon arrival at the airport and good to surf/stay connected the whole trip! :D

      • Yes, any 3G phone that supporst 2100mhz 3g at the very least.

Also, you can make reservations for 3G SIM card rentals at
        http://www.softbank-rental.jp/e/rental-plan-ib04.php

The only document you need to get a SIM card rental is to just show your Passport (or alien registration card if your length of stay exceeds 90 days in Japan)

Not sure but in HK there is a Vodafone agent called Smartone which sells prepaid SIM cards that support 4G and with per-hour data rates. Great to surf the web on.
