Best dog food for adult dogs with sensitive skin

Hi

Just seeking opinions/reviews for a good dog food for my labradoodle who has sensitive skin. We recent started using Hill's Science but it is very expensive and he is vomitting some of the food which is quite concerning.

Did some search and apparently Eukanuba does sensitive skin dog food too but its very expensive too.

Anyone knows of a more affordable alternative?

We have absolutely no idea what our dog is allergic to but he has stopped itching with the Hill's Science; except the tummy thing which is annoying him.

Thanks!

Best bet is to have a chat with your vet, a lot of allergys with dogs are linked to problems with different types of protein, I have a Dalmatian with sensitive skin, Purina Supercoat Light And Mature works for us as a low cost alternative obviously may or may not work for you. I've tried both of the expensive brands you mentioned and they worked for us to.
tanabe88gg you obviously don't own a pet with such an insensitive reply, FYI dogs/cats are not free from pounds

  • We had this problem with our beagle for a while. Do a bit of research into dog foods that have a high processed grain/cereal content, this generally causes a lot of skin allergy problems. If you read the ingredients on most dog foods, they are listed in order of highest proportion to lowest, so its best to avoid any dog food with certain grains or cereals early in the ingredient listing.

See this site too, has some really good info and you'll find some interesting stuff about Hill's Science (just because the vet stocks it, it doesn't mean its good!): http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/dog-food-reviews/hills-scienceā€¦

Dogs need high protein for their diet and you'll find that with a more expensive, high protein food, you'll actually have to feed them less than the cheaper brands with high content cereal fillers. Check out pawsforlife.com.au as they have a wide variety of brands to choose from and have a pretty good delivery system so you can get the food sent say every 8 weeks or whatever you need. We've been using a fairly expensive one called Holistic Select and the results have been really good. Also, you might want to check to see if your dogs is allergic to grass or any other plants in your garden too as it could be as simple as something like that as well and it can be treated with an antihistamine from the vet.

    • Hills Science Diet is different to Hills Prescription diet

  • Our small dog has very sensitive skin and we tried numerous foods. We ended up using Earthborn Holistic Primitive Natural (Grain Free). None of the foods cleared up the skin completely but the Earthborn Holistic seemed to be the best in keeping the skin in pretty good health. It's expensive though at $100 for 12kg (http://www.graysoutlet.com.au/#/retail/vp-31012) but I don't think there's a cheaper alternative in our situation.

There's smaller bags available so maybe give it a shot and see if it works for you.

    Good luck.

  • We have an American Bulldog which are notorious for skin problems and our is not an exception. We have been recommended to use something with a high content of fish oil. The problem with food with fish oil is that they tend to have a high fat content for bulking skinny dogs up, so if your dog is not too active it can be no good for it. For us, that is adding sardines to his food (we use Eagle Pack Hollistic Select for the food). Others we know including our breeder add fish oil, the type humans use.

I am not saying either of these are best for your problem, but it works for us.

  • Wow thanks everyone for your recommendations. I've decided to stop the Hill's Science as its obviously not working; evidenced by him throwing out all the time. I will try the other products and methods recommended here - we can't really go for options that are too expensive as he eats a lot.
