Higher hotel rates for Australians :-(

I have been looking for hotels in Hong Kong for Easter and came across a really good rate for one particular hotel on Hoteltravel.com that was around $100 less per night than any other website. I used live help to confirm it and they were nice enough to call the hotel directly.

The hotel reception then proceeded to tell the agent that that rate was for European and North Americans only and Australia was not included.

How common is this? I'm tempted to book anyway, because nowhere on the hoteltravel does it say Australians are excluded. I don't want to get abused like dwhes was… http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/83411

  • How bizarre!? Might have to try again and say you're Austrian :)

  • +1

Average incomes are higher in Australia so companies sometimes try to charge more. Tour companies will sometimes charge according to where your IP address is. I would definitely book it anyway if your confident it doesn't exclude Australians on the website. If they are upset about that, they'll email you I presume.

  • How rude!

  • Is that $100 HK less?

  • I checked the prices for hotels for an upcoming Japan trip on Agoda.com both on my PC
(Australian IP) and through the person I was visiting (Japan IP)- the price was about the same to a few dollars. Hotels.com also had about the same prices.

I'm not sure how it is in HK, but booking through one of those sites might give you the best rate. Doesn't hurt to check.
