Scoot info please - does a Tablet qualify for the 3KG Laptop allowance? and other Scoot travel tips

I guess the headline says it all. Traveling on Scoot and they say you can have 7Kg carryone, with 10Kg if you have a laptop.

But don't want to take the laptop, just a Tablet.

So do they allow the extra 3Kg for the Tablet (as a "laptop")

Also anyone know how strict they are with the carryon weight. Ie Exactly 7Kg or around 7kg, or if it looks bulky etc etc.

TIA

I recently (this month) flew Sydney <-> Singapore and they didn't even check how heavy my carry-on bag was.

  • +1

they dont care, max 10kg if they check. you can fill it up with anything

    • +1

so technically you can throw in a tablet with more stuff too, or bring back more stuff.

  • +2

They look at size more than weight for carry on luggage.

  • +1

Agreed. If it is a compact bag they won't care.

  • Thanks very much for all the great insights. And the Confirmation by many. Will come in handy.

Any other hints on Scoot travel will be appreciated.

take your own food. the onboard is cardboard and smells strong (my opinion). i took onboard 2 foot-longs, one for lunch one for dinner :)
if you are a true ozbargainer, take a couple of EMPTY 600ml water bottles through security, then fill up on other side from bubblers. savs you having to buy water at airport or airline prices.

Even better on the plane they have a filtered water "tap" that you can fill up with near the toilets. My mini ozbargainers (8 and 12) were very impressed. They have a plane budget for snacks etc but were happy just to have water and sandwiches I made so they could spend their money on slurpees in Singapore. They never looked at my carry on for weight ( we travel with one suitcase and four carryon backpacks) but the overhead lockers were stuffed by the time we got on- so common sense, don't pack anything that could break because they really pack it in.

They're not too strict on carry-on. I saw many struggling people with more than 2 bags to a person which were very much stuffed. Some people on board could not find space for their stuff so i suggest that you try to get on as early as possible. Also keep fragile stuff and valuables with you.
They will only weigh your carry-on if they see its a bit large at check in.

Also protect your head/be extra vigilant if under an overhead locker as many of them will pop out on take off…

If you're taking a tiger flight to changi and then catching a scoot flight you can pay extra to stay airside, but if you are in a group its better value to get your bags and go through customs again as scoot do offer early check-in for free at the moment. Very much welcome with the 2am sydney flight. Pack an empty drink bottle and fill it up after security/on board.

  • Nice tips everyone. Much appreciated

  • Beware about making connecting flights if you travel with Scoot.
My experience with Scoot in late January was not good. Plane left almost 5 hours late. No email or SMS to advise of delay that was known days ahead! That was what really upset me. As Scoot outsource checkin, we had to checkin at the normal time & fill in the hours in a crowded airport.
Luckily I planned to spent a night in SIN & did not have to catch a connecting flight!!! Scoot just offered a SGD$50 ($35) voucher for a flight taken within 6 months - as if I want to fly Scoot again. Delays were so bad the CEO fronted a Singapore business cable TV program to explain all the delays.

Scoots response to the delay on the 09:25 Monday flight - known about on Saturday!
We’re writing to convey our sincere apologies for the disruption to your travel plans because of the delay of TZ005 from Gold Coast to Singapore on Monday 21 January 2013, caused by the late arrival of the inbound flight.

The delay to our Gold Coast bound flight was a direct consequence of a delay to our Saturday's Bangkok flight, caused by a small group of disruptive passengers, which resulted in cascading delays to other flights using the same aircraft.

One of these was our Tianjin-Singapore flight, on which 78 passengers were connecting immediately to the Gold Coast. With all other flights to Australia full for the next few days, we elected to hold the Gold Coast flight so that they may make their connection.

We're really sorry for the inconvenience this caused you, but seek your understanding of the unusual circumstances.

In keeping with our Guest Promise, we’ve issued you and every passenger on your booking(s) with a SGD$50 Scoot travel voucher. To redeem, please see the instructions at the bottom of this email. Also, in case you need confirmation of the delay for any claim against your travel insurer you can download a copy here

Travel must be completed by 31 July 2013.

  • 5 hours late isn't really that remarkable, although it is annoying. I've been on domestic 1hr flights delayed that long.
Qantas once flew me to London 19 hours late. That was a pain.
As the guy in first class said, he spent $12000 for that. Mind you, his seat was more comfortable for an extra slog.

    • Delays are not that remarkable (I travel up to 9 months a year), but how Scoot hid knowledge of the delay was.
Scoots CEO had to defend his company from criticism of so many similar delays from a Singapore interviewer.

It delayed all the hundreds of passengers on the flight from SIN-Gold Coast & back to help 78, due to disruption by a few. Being a budget carrier, they did not want/have another aircraft to fill the gap. Scoot knew about the delay 2 days before & did not tell us! They had our email & phone details. They outsource checkin, so I expect a later checkin would have cost them more. Telling us early would have meant we could have changed connecting flights, accommodation etc.

Have had a 24 hour delay due to unexpected engine problems on Air Asia also at Gold Coast. There they gave us 2 $10 vouchers over a few hours as they worked out the problem, then a night at a resort with $50 for meals - on a $99 flight! Could not have been better service.

      • i think scoot usually notify through facebook [eugh] delays etc. Not the best medium of communication in this situation tho.

Also, if you would like to bring subway on the plane at sydney, its before security!

        • No FB or any notification in late January.

        • Never had a problem bringing food through security, so Subway should be OK.
Note - at GC airport, there are 2 security checks - as International departures leads off from the Domestic area.

I remember this in my newsfeed, but it is bad form of them not to notify customers through main contacts. Its not like everybody has access to the internet when traveling! I think the next time there is any delay with scoot, it safe to assume there will be knock on effects on each flight because of their tight schedule and teeny tiny fleet. I traveled a few days after the initial incident in january and accordingly braced myself.
As usual, they departed 45 minutes late from syd!

        • Thanks for that. Interesting Comments!
Did not appear on my FB account, so we need to keep a watch on Scoot FB in case they've cancelled our flight!
If I had been notified earlier, I should have saved a nights accommodation on the Gold Coast & travelled down the next day for the afternoon flight.

But Scoot still kept checkin to before 08:25!! So notification still meant you had to arrive & wait an extra 5 hours for no reason, other than to keep Scoots costs down.

  • I was at the end of the queue at check in, & did not pay for an allocated seat. Ended up with 3 seats to myself. A couple also at the end of the queue got 3 long legroom seats - also did not pay for an allocated seat. Later staff were selling off similar spacious seats at $30.
Previous flight got a middle seat on way to SIN. I was going to SIN Food Festival, then on to Melacca for food. Found myself between a guy from SIN & a woman from Melacca - got great travel & food advice!
No problems with just under 8kg (weighed) carry on pack plus another 3 kg (not weighed) of food, electronics, etc.
And Scoots hot food is crap!

  • You can get away with a laptop bag and one carry on bag as long as it meets their specified measurement and is below 7 kg. I kept mine at 7kg and check in chick weighed it, but I think you could get away with it being more. I carry a tablet and laptop normally, they didn't weight my laptop bag, so you can always put more in that if need be. Anyways to get out of paying for checkin luggage is nice, and the advantage of not needing to wait around for luggage after you arrive is nice as well. If you fly airasia, its the same deal, they didn't even bother weighing my baggage at all, it probably depends a lot on what checkin staff you get too.

    • A few weeks back in KL's LCCT AA staff were checking the new 1 bag policy was enforced & weighed any larger or heavier carry on. People caught by the 1bag rule had the added inconvenience & high baggage costs paid at checkin.

  • well i guess i was lucky then I took 22kg carry on from sing. :S Of all people qantas complained at my conecting in syd…

  • Tablet is good for travel

  • Just an update on my Scoot experience.

    1. Carryon luggage, wasnt checked at all.
    2. I made the mistake of upgrading to "business" class. It was advertised as $99 on lovely signs at the airport, but there is a mandatory "service" fee of $40 so that makes it $139 not $99/. And if I paid with credit card that would have incurred a 15% surcharge.
    3. Now business class gives the following "advantages"

Preferred seat selection in an exclusive 32-seat upfront cabin, with our most experienced staff
      A complimentary meal with beverages
      20kg of checked baggage allowance
Up to 15kg/ two bags of carry-on baggage
      Priority boarding
ScooTV in-flight entertainment streamed to your own device
Request a free access code from our crew and remember to bring your own laptop or tablet*. If you have an iPad, download the Gogo Video Plugin before your flight. On multi-sector journeys, ScooTV access codes will be given out on a per sector basis.
      In-seat power
      Fast-track check-in at Scoot's dedicated ScootBiz counter
Flexibility to change name, date, time, origin and destination of your booking up till 2 days before departure* (change fees & fare top-ups apply).

All great and all good except that upgrading at the airport costs the extra fee, and you have already prebooked your meal, already limited your carryon baggage to somewhere near the 10kg, have either paid for check in baggage, or dont have it, so no advantage there.

The meal doesnt add to the one you have prepaid, its the same, and if you want a second meal you have to pay.

Now it was nice to have better seats (or so I thought), but I had already paid for upgraded seats from the basic ones. Again no allowance or refund on those. And really when we came back in the same seats upgraded seats (yellow ones) we had, while they werent leather, they were still just as comfortable.

Frankly to call them business class seats is like a retro PanAm flight of the early eighties, where business class seats dont even match most full service premium economy standards.

Now we did get 2 in flight entertainment cards worth $15 each, but having preloaded my ipad with movies and docs, that were better than the inflight offerings these were never used. Any offers for two cards? Valid until end 2014.

As for priority checkin, that made no difference as you upgrade only when you check in so you are already there.

So dont fall for the upgrade offer onboard or at the airport.

Oh and like others have said, skip the meals. They are really poor.

You can take empty bottles thru at Sydney and Singapore, and fill it up airside. Sydney after customs, Singapore there is filtered water at the boarding gate which is available after security. If you need flavouring you can take some tang like powder to add.

  • Does anyone know if parents with small children get to board first?

I know they do this on some other airlines, wondering if scoot is the same.

    • From memory (it was 2am in the morning) they did make this announcement. But they do make other announcements quickly so you need to be near the gate ready to go.
