JANIBANK.COM - scam

Hi People.
Earlier this month I bought some cheapo earrings or something from a deal posted here. They were a dollar or something.
I have just noticed that some janibank mob has been trying to take money from my card - thankfully without luck as it's a prepaid card with a low balance.
They tried and failed to take out $49 on two occasions recently.
I'm going to ditch this prepaid credit card because of this, but was wondering if any other people have had this problem?

  • I've googled it, and it seems to be a common scam…

  • which deal?

  • how do you know they tried to take $49? is there a transaction record for it?

you will potentially have the same problem with a bank issued credit/debit card if someone gets hold of your card details. i seem to recall with banks you can ring up and arrange for them to block further visa authorisations from a particular merchant. maybe it is the same for prepaid cards (i don't know)

  • I cant recall exactly to be honest which deal it was. I can recall thinking "eh! - if it doesn't come, it doesn't come…". Like I said it was cheap earrings - I thought I'd buy them for the G/F as a joke. Ha! The joke was on me…

Anyhoo, it really doesn't matter (prepaid card can be thrown out). I was just curious if it'd happened to others here & also to raise awareness of the issue.

For sure I will be VERY careful where I use my real credit card…

  • +1

Have you notified the issuing bank? If not, you should, for everybody else's sake as well.

And here is a quote from one of their web sites->

"Jukebux.com is charging you because you have signed up for a special offer which includes a free welcome gift and free shipping. This special offer comes with a 14-day trial account after which an upfront payment for the monthly membership fee will be automatically deducted from your credit card."

    • In other words, the OP's a sucker?

No, not at all. Seems to be their scam. Must be some tiny 'small print' somewhere on the page/site.

  • Issuing bank is the post office.

Hmmm?… Interesting. I definitely wasn't aware of signing up to a trail. It was definitely a deal on ozbargain, but I cant find any trace of it. I suspect it may have been removed because it was spam / scam…
