Looking for cheap way to increase wifi signal - Router in repeater mode?

Hi all,

I would like to increase the wifi signal in my house. I was reading about using an old Router in Repeater mode would solve it?

I bought the recent $2.50 DLINK N150 modem and was hoping it would work, unfortunately it does not seem to have repeater functionality.

Can anybody recommend a cheap router / way?

Is it easy to configure?

Cheers,

Frank

    Hi Frank,

Not sure if this will help, but I think I've managed to use the D-Link to extend my wireless signal by turning it in to a Wireless Access Point and connecting it via ethernet to my main router using the following:

[As Per TimmyJ here - http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/94606?page=1]

    1. Download the DD-WRT firmware for the DIR-300 Rev B from http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/router-database (file name "dlink-dir300b-factory-webflash").
    2. Unplug power, hold down reset button, plug power back in, keep reset held for 5-10 seconds.
    3. I connected to the wireless D-Link network (presume a wired link should be recommended but this is what I did).
    4. Go to http://192.168.0.1/ in web browser and you should be at the emergency recovery page where you can choose the downloaded firmware file and upload to flash.

    [As per DD-WRT Wiki here - http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Wireless_Access_Point]

    1. Followed the long version of the instruction, including most of the optional points.
    2. Reset D-Link and it seemed to work.

It seems to be working so far, although I have very little idea about what any of the above steps actually do.

  • Yes I followed the steps and get repeater mode working now. Dlink dir412

  • Thanks for your replies and tips.

I bought the D-Link router from the link above. Do I need a cross over network cable or just a regular one?

    Cheers,

    Frank
