How can I tell if my computer is slow or the connection is slow?

My computer freezes and will not change pages, it may just be the computer as it is a cheapy and is about 4 years old. Can I check the speed of the broadband connect to find out? thanks

  • If it's freezing when you're not using the net, then it's likely a computer problem (and most likely not enough RAM)

If it only stalls when online, then it's likely a connection problem
    speedtest.net

Other problems could be interference in your WiFi if you're connected to the modem that way or a a flaky internet connection that drops out regularly.

  • Do the menus and window switching still work quickly? If so the problem is your connection. If they don't the problem is your PC.

  • I am not sure what menus I am really challenged in this are, when I click on Ozbargains to see the latest deal, somtimes there is no drop down menu for 5 seconds or more. I often have four tabs open across the top of the page, but somtimes I click to change and it will not for another 5+ seconds. I have tried different browsers and at the moment am using Safari with free AVG as my virus checker and scanner. I am going to try speedtest.net and see what reading I get thanks.

    • Safari and AVG??? Try out Chrome/Opera with avast.

    • am using Safari

Problem is most likely you have a mac :D

In all seriousness, I had problems where my router was getting interference from something else (cordless phone? something else wireless near) Try changing the channel or band your router is transmitting on.

Also, get chrome and I use comodo antivirus and have never had problems with it.

      Hope this helps

        Try reading the thread.

1: This is not a Mac.

2: This is not a network problem.

  • Hey that was fun the speeds I get are
    Ping 57 ms
    Download 4.51 mbps
    Upload 0.54 mbps

Is that good or bad? thanks

    • It is good enough. If changing tabs is slow the problem is NOT your connection. What to do about it is a lot more complicated. Good chance you have malware, but there is no silver bullet for this.

      • My ping is 8ms and Download 17.5 on Optus Cable

        • +3

          Showoff :)

        • Thanks for sharing.

  • Try to check you system for viruses and other malware staff with Dr.Web Cure It:
    http://www.freedrweb.com/cureit/?lng=en
Very reliable free portable virus scanner.
    It's for Windows.

Safari… Do you have Mac? Then disregard my previous comment.
Try to fix it with this list of suggestions:
    http://www.all-about-apple.com/slow-mac-performance-learn-ho…
Then check it for this list of reasons:
    http://osxdaily.com/2012/10/11/mac-running-slow-reasons/

If you're using Safari for Windows still, then check you system for viruses and consider switching to contemporary browser - Firefox/Opera/Chrome.

If nothing helped, then it might be hardware fail because of age or overheat.

  • hello, thanks SHPION for the information, I am scanning now, will check back later and no I do not have a Mac, someone at work told me to use Safari, previously I was using Chrome or Firefox but was having issues. Maybe I need to go back to Firefox or Chrome will get back int a while as I am runnign Dr Web Cure it now. thanks

    • 1st things to do in Windows to escape lags:
      review autorun items,
      clean browser cache and cookies,
      clean recycle bin,
      clean temporary folders,
      review desktop and documents contents,
      review profile contents,
      update system.

Remember: The more files you have in you profile folder, the slower Windows works.

Most of these require some advanced knowledge to not to kill system, if you are not sure what you are doing - don't do it. Try to use built-in clean up utility (not very helpful unfortunately, but may clean some most obvious places without damaging system).

Free at least 10% of space on your system drive, If you never made a defragmentation or made it more then couple months ago - do it (not for SSD!!!). Also check hard drive (especially system partition for errors): run command "chkdsk * /f" in command prompt (say Y for all questions) and restart your computer.

  • I have never had an issue with chrome
    I use FREE http://www.microsoft.com/en-au/security/pc-security/mse.aspx
And once a month run FREE http://www.safer-networking.org/

PC has been virus free for several years

    • Good boy)))
Very healthy practice to use free and reliable software!
      Next step is Ubuntu!)))

      • Dont know about healthy practice but I reckon it is SMART practice to use the anti virus software recommended for win7 by the guys who made it, especially when they provide it free.

Of course you can buy your Norton etc and enjoy the free bloat that it provides.

    • PC has been virus free for several years

In my experience this has more to do with the user and education that any software being run. A trojan (which almost all 'viruses' are) will beat any software.

  • If this is a PC, CTRL-ALT-ESC.

    Performance Tab.

How to read this depends on your version of Windows, but I suspect you've run out of memory, and your system is paging to the hard drive excessively. Another way is to check how much disk activity is going on, if your hard disk light is on almost constantly, I would strongly suspect this.

Need more info to help you. All I know is what browser and anti-virus you're using which isn't anywhere close to enough information to help you.

  • computer specs??
