Can you help? I have a NokiaN97 mini and am wanting cheap mobile access while overseas. I don't plan on making many calls back to Aust. Most of my calls will be within the USA and UK. I have printed out the Wiki (USA pay as you go sim data) from this web site. But I cannot work it out? It appears from my research that the USA is still only on 2G? (I think my phone will be ok)
Question:
1. Has anyone used Woolworths Mobile Global Roaming Sim? Any feedback?
2. Is it best to buy a cheap phone over there (USA)?
3. I will be using my laptop to pick up my internet mail and to SKYPE etc
4. I am looking for the cheapest option (apart from making no calls at all!)
Thanks

"cheap mobile access while overseas" = never use a provider in australia overseas
OK, that makes sense - it's still roaming if the sim is connected to one of our telco's.
Hi Neil, I was interested in getting the $30 plan as well, but was under the impression that you could only purchase it online or from the walmart online store? I tried purchasing it from here but they wouldn't accept a non-USA credit card. I also heard there were some problems with activation as well as you need a T-mobile phone IMEI to activate the sim.
What are your experiences? Cheers.
I generally buy it in store and the people there help me activate the sim and get the right plan. As I was in NY, I went to the Time Square T-Mobile shop and explained that I wanted the $2/day plan. Since I was going to be there for over 2 weeks they recommended a plan which ended up costing $32.66 ($30 + 8.875% tax).
I used the Internet non-stop for Google maps and email, called a bit. I'm pretty sure it wasn't a 4G plan but more their 3G/2G plan. The in-store people are pretty flexible if you tell them your needs.
Thanks
I assume your phone is unlocked ?
Depends how long you're going to be there as to whether it's worth finding a local SIM. For laptop use, the most important tip is only stay in hotels with free wireless.
I have used TruSim which works in the US and UK and is one of the better options for calls and data. You can add a local number in the US and UK for a little extra. But still not as cheap as local SIM.
I only turn on data when I've got free wireless access.
I was recently in the UK and got a lebara sim card at the train station for 5 pounds which had call credit on it. I used it in UK Italy and Malaysia for local calls and still had credit at the end of my trip. Don't know if they are in the states as well
