Wi-Fi Signal Booster

Hi,

I recently moved to a house that is narrow and long. Unfortunately the only phone power point is in back room and my WiFi is struggling to reach the living room. My modem also happens to be at the end of its use, but Im not interested in replacing it yet as the NBN is just around the corner, thus I'll need a new modem for that soon anyway.

So now I am looking for an easy cost effective way to extend the wifi signal to my livingroom. I was thinking about one of those boosters you just plug into your wall, you sync it with the modem and Voila! All done!

I saw some on ebay starting from $19,- upwards, but they come with EU/US adapters and I don't have a travel adapter anymore…..

Does anyone know of something cheaper or of similar price but than with an Aussie adapter???

Cheers :o)

  • two ways off the top of my head.

    1. Run a lan cable from the corner of the house to the middle, then just plug in a cheap $20 wireless router
    2. Ethernet over power.
  • I recommend the first way. Ethernet over power could be as finicky as wireless.

Do it the proper way, run a lan cable to the middle of the house then plug it into one of these:

Costs less than 50 bucks and is pretty powerful (although I've heard that there may be a faulty batch, so watch out!)

But from experience, just do it once, and do it right!

  • The problem with running a cable, is that it will have to go loose on the floor as I can't easily access the crawl space in the roof and this house has a concrete slab. So loose on the floor is going to be a magnet for my 3yo :o\

Oh well, it will have to do until the NBN comes around. Luckily they have started laying the cables in and around our town about 2 months ago. So hopefully the NBN isn't too far away.

Do you think a portable travel router could do the job? Or does it have to be a hardwired router?

    • It gets slower if it has to wirelessly jump from point to point. Remember you only have to bring the cable far enough down the house so that you can get signal from the other end.

Also, if you've got crappy skirting boards, you could always just gaffa tape the cable to it

  • Get a white cable and run along you cornice?

  • Could get a NBC/adsl2+ wireless router?

  • Just bumping this up as I'm interested in the same thing. I just returned an aldi wifi signal booster that never worked, would really like something similar that did. This one was really small and plugged into a powerpoint.

  • Had the same problem, poor signal at other end of house, I found my apple airport extreme base station has much better wireless signal strength/penetration than the ADSL modem/routers I tried (a couple of billion models and a linksys). Possibly not a cost effective solution for you though if you don't already have one to try.
