Sydney to Japan via Jetstar - who's been recently?

Hey guys,

I'm flying off to Tokyo with Jetstar soon and it's a two leg journey…Sydney to GC and then GC to Tokyo (Narita).
What I wanted to know was whether your bags are checked in for the whole journey from Sydney to Tokyo, or whether you need to do 2 separate check-ins?

Basically I'm wondering whether I need to get to Sydney airport 2hrs before check-in or just the normal 1 hr for domestic flights. It's an early flight 7am so I really don't want to get there earlier than I have to.

I rang customer service and the girl was so ambiguous….first she said, "it's best to arrive 3 hrs before"…and then changed to "Actually, they'll be 2 separate check ins, so arrive at Sydney 1 hr before and at GC check in 3 hours before".

What have other people done?

I went from Melbourne to Osaka last year which had us fly through to Cairns. Melb-Cairns is a domestic leg, so domestic rules should apply. We had to wheel the bags from the domestic terminal to the international in Cairns and re-checkin up there.

The above is unique to Jetstar. If you fly United Melbourne —-> LAX/SFO, you will need to connect in Sydney. United flys out from the international terminal to Sydney international. No need to re-check in Sydney.

  • Thanks Neil, that's very helpful.

I did Osaka to GC then GC to sydney. All the international stuff was done between Osaka and GC. The first checkin will be domestic as there will be other passengers only going up to GC and staying there. So they can't have international checkin procedures for them. You'll have to pick up your bags at GC and checkin like you just got there to get to Tokyo.

  • You will collect your bags twice.
