I wonder how many people are going to screw up the dosage on this stuff and kill their cat by trying to give it a dose suitable for a dog or something. Frontline Dog and Frontline Cat are different strengths. Don't attempt to use Frontline Dog on your cat unless you're very good at math AND you can get a look at a Frontline Cat package to determine the makeup, dosage, etc.

    • What's the correct dosage for a human? Do you multiply by 7?

    • Check that there is no difference in chemicals for cats and dogs.
I know some of them have Permethrin in it for Dogs but they don't for the Cat Equivalent due to it being toxic to cats.

Just researched Frontline Original for Dogs may have Permethrin. Only Frontline Plus uses a different formula which excludes Permethrin.

Therefore be careful about using this for Cats.

    • Sigh, nonsense: Frontline has a huge margin of safety (its active ingredient fipronil is essentially non-toxic to mammals) and you would need to use a large number of Extra XLarge Dog Frontline pipettes to have any effect on your cat.

Be aware that Frontline Original is inferior to Frontline Plus: Frontline Plus contains methoprene that is an insect growth regulator that inactivates flea eggs and larvae and is thus much more effective as part of a co-ordinated flea control programme.

Both versions of Frontlines contain Fipronil as the active flea-killing ingredient, NOT permethrin (where do people dredge this permethrin misinformation up from?). The Plus version is far superior which is why vets haven't sold F/Original for probably 10 years or more.

As an aside, in cats Revolution has better ovocidal activity than Frontline Plus (but costs 50% more), but both products are far superior to Frontline Original.

Pretty sure small dog is identical to large cat.

    • Probably a very good idea to do some research before trying any Dog flea treatment on your cat as I vaguely remember
there is something in the Dog versions of flea treatments that is poisonous to cats and can kill them.

        Its Permethrin.
Frontline Plus doesn't have it since they use a new formula.

    • Don't ever use a flea treatment with Permethrin on your cat. Your cat will go into toxic shock and die.

  • Hi Rep,
Does this prevent Sarcoptic and Demodectic Mange causing parasites?

    • Hi Bozter,

Frontline Original deals specifically with the treatment and prevention of flea infestations, control of flea allergy dermatitis, control of ticks (including paralysis ticks) and biting lice on dogs.

For more detailed information on the products possible further prevention attributes please refer to the manufactures detailed medication information http://www.frontlineplus.com.au/frontlineoriginal/ and/or consult your qualified veterinary physician.

      Cheers

    • Demodectic mange is acquired by puppies from the bitch only in the first 3 days of life and is thus not otherwise contagious. None of the spot-on products will generally kill Demodectic Mange (which is a hard condition to control or even cure).

Sarcoptic Mange (Scabies) on the other hand is highly contagious (commonly caught from foxes and koalas on the suburbia/country interface): as such, your pet generally only catches it once (unless you constantly let it roam in the bush and wander down foxholes, etc). Revolution is a far superior product for the treatment/cure of Sarcoptic Mange.

  • Pretty good deal, this stuff is damn expensive in stores.
