Cheapest way to replace a 23" touchscreen for All-In-One desktop?

I have a Toshiba 23" All-In-One desktop which has a 10point multitouch screen. The computer is Oz stock and still within its 1 year warranty.

I broke the screen an hour ago (don't ask me how I did it, I'm embarrassed to say).
The desktop is still usable, the screen still displays, just now it has cracks and loses the touch function, also sometimes could randomly "clicks" my top left-hand corner which is quite annoying when you're typing.

I checked the Toshiba warrenty, unfortunately this damage to the LCD screen is in the list of what the warranty NOT covers". Sad, then I called one of the Toshiba service centre, quoted me $600 for just replacing the screen.
I originally bought the computer for just below $900. I just don't find the quote is reasonable. I also tried ebay, local repair shops but no luck.

Has anyone ever been in the situation like mine? How did you fix it?

Many thanks.

  • Do you have household contents insurance???

    • yes i do. does home contents insurance cover this too?

      • Sure does, it's called 'accidental breakage'! You will of course need a plausible story for the 'accident', unfortunately "secret…" won't cut the mustard for any insurance company! ;)

Failing that, you could always consider a replacement/3rd party digitizer if the LCD display itself hasn't been damaged…google Cyclotouch etc for details.

          thanks StewBalls.

        • Any hope from the insurance?

      • Accidental damage is often considered an extra and costs more.. you may not have it but its worth a shot!

        • Actually when you do that it raises all our premiums, so no thanks :P

        • You're kidding, right???

I suppose you still believe in the tooth fairy too…LOL :)

        • No I'm not kidding, it's how insurance works

        • No, it's not…that's just the boogeyman they use to threaten children in order to dissuade them from making claims. Don't you find it funny how you just keep paying & not claiming but the premiums keep rising anyway?

The formulae for increasing premiums across the board take into account far more than a few people claiming mate, don't be so naive!

        • By gosh Stew, I think you're on to something! We should raise a lawsuit against these companies!

        • Let me know how that goes for ya! ;)

  • So how did you break it?

    • +1

      secret…

  • The Toshiba website lists its spare parts reseller as: EMPR Australia - Spare Parts Reseller to public

Not sure on your exact part number because you didn't specify your model, but I'm guessing it's an LX730. EMPR has prices around $630.80 for similar screens. As far as I can tell, that price doesn't include repairs.
    http://store.emprgroup.com.au/c-37187-display.aspx

For laptop displays, you can often find them for around $100 on ebay. I wasn't able to find your screen on there. I guess people break laptop displays more frequently.

Maybe you can contact a LCD replacement panel vendor such as http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/16-0-Laptop-LCD-CCFL-Screen-Toshi…

You can still use your computer with an external monitor, but it will look bad…

    • Thanks twocsies. The model is LX830/007. I asked two of the LCD panel vendors they said sorry they don't do AIO PCs but I'll ask the one you wrote here. Yep the toshiba service centre told me i can use the computer with an external monitor…don't like the idea though.

    • And thanks for the EMPR link. I found the part
      http://store.emprgroup.com.au/c-36162-display.aspx
(PQQ15A-007001) $950.95 inc GST. And the price is more than the "cost price" of my computer.. don;t know what to do now.

  • you don't need the actual lcd panel itself, which is what i think the repair for $600 was for, you need just the touch screen digitizer which goes over the screen, small sizes are easy to find as in mobile phone/tablet/laptops but larger ones are more $$$ and soldering can be a bugger with those thin ribbon cables
I broke the screen an hour ago (don't ask me how I did it, I'm embarrassed to say) maybe you were looking at a pr0n site and got a little too excited? i'm thinking Steve Martin in Man with 2 Brains scene with glass window breakage… :O

    • Thanks morpheu, hope to get a good price for the digitizer.

maybe you were looking at a pr0n site and got a little too excited?
It's much better than that. ;)

      • You're a head banger?

      • People usually do it on the kitchen table or bench.

  • I bet it is not much better
